VIZIO Internet Apps

VIZIO offers VIZIO Internet Appsthe marriage of high definition television and Internet online content.

VIZIO Class XVT HDTVs with Internet Apps were first introduced over five years ago including the XVT 3SV HDTV with VIA™.VIA Plus™ came later.

What VIZIO has done is amazing. The company developed a feature-rich, state-of-the-art HDTV with built-in Internet application functionality.

At the same time, it has nurtured partnerships with numerous online service and content providers – including movies on demand, Facebook, CNBC, NBC, radio, video and many more. Scroll to the end of this hub to see the range of content choices offered by VIZIO.

VIZIO Internet Apps will be dynamically updated to include new service and content providers as the company continues to add content partners.

YouTube is now one the VIA Apps available on VIZIOs with Internet Apps. It is a good example of VIZIO's updating their VIA App lineup from time to time with apps their viewers will enjoy.

VIZIO Internet Apps Reviews have been favorable. For example, CNET says of VIZIO apps: "Response times were quick, the Apps interface is well-designed and surprisingly easy to use, and integration and content selection surpasses that of any other Internet-enabled TV, regardless of manufacturer."

But -- The Apps for Older VIZIO Models are Not Being Updated

Older VIZIOs, like the XVT SV model I bought over five years ago, still retain their amazing video performance. But, the VIA App lineup is growing obsolete. That is because providers like Amazon Prime Video no longer support these older VIZIOs.

Take my experience for example. I recently decided to add Amazon Prime to my VIZIO app lineup, but found that was not possible. I called VIZIO and they said that Amazon no longer supports my VIZIO model.

So, like computers, or phones, or other devices, they become obsolete. I did not want to buy a new HDTV, since my VIZIO is as good as new (except for the App functionality). So I bought a basic streaming stick from Roku such as Roku Streaming Stick | Portable, power-packed player with voice remote with TV power and volume (2017), and now I have access to over 3000 sites and over 300,000 movies and shows.

How VIZIO Internet Apps Work

Press the VIA button on your remote. An Apps Dock will appear along the bottom of the screen. It will offer you a rich selection of different Apps that let you watch movies, TV shows, listen to music, or get weather and news information -- all on demand.

While some of these services are free, others come with subscription fees or other charges that vary by content provider.

VIZIO and its third party providers reserve the right to charge you for any support it provides, but will make a schedule of those charges available to you prior to your incurring any costs. Before you purchase a VIZIO with Internet Apps, you should read over the VIZIO Internet Applications (VIA™) Policy.

Some of the VIZIO Internet Apps may come pre-loaded on your HDTV XVT. For example, your HDTV with Internet Apps purchased from Amazon will come pre-loaded with Amazon Video on Demand, Flickr, Netflix, Rhapsody, Twitter, VUDU and Yahoo TV Widgets, ready to launch onscreen by touching a button on the remote.

In addition to pre-loaded apps, there are many other apps to choose from. Press the VIA™ button, select the Widget Gallery, and rotate through the additional apps. Select one you would like added to your VIA Dock and it will be downloaded and appear on your personal dock. Other family members can create their own set of favorite apps that will appear on their docks.

Here is my working list of VIZIO's Internet App third party content providers (source: either online or scheduled. VIZIO will dynamically update their app selections in VIA™ any time, so this list is always subject to change.

The VIZIO XVT series comes in 42-inch, 47-inch and 55-inch models

NEWS -- The VIZIO 3SV models with Internet Apps contain all the popular features of the earlier models with Internet Apps with added appearance and technology improvements. The new models are now available from Amazon.

Reviews -- Highly favorable reviews of the new VIZIO XVT553SV 55-Inch model are coming in at over two-thirds 5-star Amazon ratings.

In addition to VIZIO Internet Apps, each model comes with . . .

. . . a blazing speed refresh rate (240 Hz), 1080p razor-sharp High Definition, Bluetooth remote with a keypad, 802.11n dual-band wireless networking, two built-in 15-watt speakers, advanced sound technology, and multiple HDMI ports.

The 47-inch and 55-inch models come with advanced backlighting and Smart Dimming technologies.

All models are eco-friendly – they use 50 percent less energy than Energy Star 3.0 and LED backlights that use no mercury.

Insightful story, but really nothing new. With AFM going on this week, lots of interesting articles on the state of the industry, indie production and sales. And while "Independent" can have a very wide definition as far as budget, producer and director - good revenue in foreign markets is essential to a distribution strategy. And that is based on recognizable stars they can sell to their audiences. Not that it can't be done without stars, but most deals made are commensurate with who's on the screen. And of course, good story, production value, etc.

For us, as animators, we went with filmbay and are very happy with them. Our animated feature "Bulgarian Prophet" is now available as web stream VOD: and they also enabled access to our film in all Asian markets. They did the subtitling into other Asian languages free, at no cost, and went out of their way to support and market it worldwide. Our film is even available on airlines now, including KAL, JAL and Singapore Airlines! I wish you would run a full story on them here, since they awesome, to say the least, and yes, we are getting solid royalties, which we are investing into our next feature project. Thanks and have a great weekend. We love Indie films, Yavor and Ilse Batchev:-)

Interesting information on apps for the new equipment and app interfaces that I and most likely many are unaware that they exist on or for new flat screens they purchased for watching cable or satellite. This was well written and a boost for me to get out the manual on my new LG television to see just what it can do or what apps there are for it, thanks,

Currently I use my PS3 to watch videos and stream music from my PC drive (using DLNA - in my case Windows Media Server).

That is the one thing that seems to be missing from the VISIO Tvs that other internet enabled TVs have.

I don't understand why it isn't supported, but I'm afraid tht as A result I'll have to go with Samsung or someone like that.

After reading comments on the lack of an internet browser app I've decided not to buy a Vizio TV. I'll wait until I have full internet access from the TV or I'll buy a laptop and connect it to a less expensive flat screen. Seems like the providers are setting us up for a future of goughing like the cable companies are doing now.

      Hi John,

Is there any news on creating a software update that will allow music and videos to be viewed and played through the USB port of the VIZIO TV's??? I currently have a M550NV with a bunch of USB ports, but all I can do is look at pictures with a built-in slideshow feature (which is very nice, btw). Please let me know about the possibility of adding a Video Player that will allow my AVI files to be played off my external hard drive through the USB port.

Also, please let me know if there is any news on making the legacy VIZIO's compatible with the new VIA+, because I'd love to have Youtube Access sometime in the near future. Thanks a bunch

      Hi JD and Glenn --

When VIZIO releases VIZIO Internet Apps Plus with Google TV, there will be a browser. Since the Chrome browser is a Google property, you can be sure that it will be the one. In fact, the Chrome browser logo could be seen on the screen during preliminary demonstrations of VIA+ in January.

Hi desterchn, bakerster, and GeraloZ --

It would be great if VIZIO's upcoming VIA + platform would be available to legacy VIZIO Internet App HDTVs. VIZIO won't say at this point whether it will or it won't. I just don't know yet. One thing I do know is that there would be a ton of HAPPY VIZIO owners if they do extend VIA+.

The TWIT Network is lead by Leo Laporte "The Tech Guy", along with many of his fellow specialists in the many fields of today's High-Tech Products. Most of them have interesting (audio/video) 'Podcasts', that can be downloaded & listened/watched at any time.

Just seems a bit odd & strange that these "internet enabled devices" don't come with a browser widget/app that would have allowed us to access a wide-variety of web/internet content out there... It seems like a pretty nasty restriction to limit us to access online/web content only via custom app(s).

    • profile image

      JD 7 years ago

Is there a reason why most of the internet enabled devices (like latest HDTVs including Vizio TV, Bluray players) don't come with a "Browser App/Widget"? I have one of the latest Vizio HDTVs, but, was surprised not to see a browser widget. On doing more research, it looks like most of these internet enabled TVs & blu-ray players just don't provide a Browser widget/app - it seems like the only exceptions are: Sony PS3 & some Samsung blu-ray players.

Hi Zack, George, Brooke and Mischelle --

Thank you for you YouTube suggestion. YouTube has become a popular site for millions of people. I really understand why you would like to see it on a VIZIO Internet App.

YouTube has grown like gangbusters. Started in a garage in 2005, it was purchased by Google in 2006 so YouTube is now a Google property. All content providers, Google included, want to closely guard how their content is distributed. Google TV is also a Google property, and walla! YouTube comes with Google TV.

The next generation of VIZIO apps, called VIZIO Internet Apps Plus -- includes the Google TV engine as a result of a new agreement between VIZIO and Google. YouTube will be included in the new lineup of VIZIO Internet Apps Plus. These new models will be released later this year.
