Critical Review of Kindle Fire HDX

Kindle Fire HDX was released few weeks ago. It has some improvements over its predecessor I.e Kindle Fire DX. There are few things you must know before you buy this tablet, especially in terms of shortcomings and great features that it has. I have taken time to point out some of them in this review.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX

The Shortfalls You Must Know About Before You Buy Kindle Fire HDX

  • Lack of Google Play Store

Kindle Fire HDX comes with Amazon Fire OS 3.0 codenamed "Mojito". This OS is developed based on Android 4.2.2, but this does not mean that you will be able to use the Mojito like you use Andriod. For example this OS deos not come with Google Play, meaning that you may not have access to some applications that are only available on Google play but not available on Amazon Application Store. A prospective buyer should therefore know that you may miss some of your favorite applications if you are using this tablet. I will suggest that you research thoroughly whether some of the applications that are most important to you are supported by Mojito. If you have already bought this tablet and you find this limited application selection as a problem then you may root the tablet. One disadvantage of doing this is that you will lose your warranty.

  • Office Suite Issue

The office suite that comes with the device only allows you to view documents. It would have been better if Amazon allows creation of documents with this office suite.

  • Price Issue

Although the price is not too high but I am of the opinion that it would have been better if the price is a bit lower. There are many similar tablets that have lower prices.

  • No HDMI Port

This may not really be a big deal but if you are the type that rely on this port to transfer files then you should know that it is not present in this model unlike predecessor models. However, this tablet can sent video content to a supported TV, game console or through a device like a Wireless Display HDMI adapter wirelessly using "second Screen".

  • Lack of Expandable Memory

The tablet does not come with external memory slot, but it comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. You may consider buying larger memory size tablet if you need large memory.

  • Miscellaneous Issues

If you buy the "Kindle Fire HDX with Special Offers" Then you may not be able to customize the tablet to your wish. For example you may not be able to set the background picture on your tablet as you wish especially when the screen is locked.

Also a prospective user should know that the tablet only allows you to create profile for your children aged 8 and below. It would have been better if you are able to create separate profiles for older children also.

But in spite of all these shortcomings, Kindle Fire HDX has many fantastic features that makes it especially excellent for book lovers and college students. The following are the great features of Kindle Fire HDX.

Precaution You Must Take Before You Buy Kindle Fire HDX

Don't Rush into Buying Case

There has being complaint of case not supporting full usage of the tablet and I will recommend that you buy the Amazon case for it.

Suggestion For Improvements on the Kindle Fire HDX

There are many aspects of this tablet that needs one or more improvement but the one I will like to point out here is that Amazon should try to include an office application that allows you to edit, view and create office documents in their latter generation tablets.

Kindle Fire HDX is a great tablet with many great features. It combines many fantastic features that makes you want to read. This tablet is expecially great for college students. Except for few shortcommings that this tablet has, it is very good for day to day usage.

I was just wondering if anyone had any issues with their downloaded books not displaying covers on the carousel. When I click my books tab they do show covers but the minute I put on carousel they are gone. Any help?

I'm closely looking into buying the Kindle HDX because you can get free movie downloads if you are an Amazon Prime customer (which I am). One of the main reasons that I have a tablet is to be able to watch video when I travel. However, I'm not crazy about not having the Google Play store available. Good review - voted up, interesting and useful.
