I use Snapshot, which is a Firefox (and maybe other browser) addon. It works great.

It comes down to what you need to do.

If you just want to grab a single screen shot you can do so right now by pressing PrtScrn (Print Screen key) to copy the desktop to your "clipboard" to paste directly into say word, or into Microsoft Paint (so you can edit it/crop it). (all included in the OS of your using Windows).  Hint if you open up any program, say your web browser and want to capture just that, make sure you click the open browser first (get focus) and then press Alt and PrtScn at the same time to capture just the open web browser to paste into your editing software.

There are more advanced capture tools like snagit (most cost money) that do all kinds of advanced things, but if your looking for fast and simple this way with a little help from Paint covers most user needs.

If you're using a Mac, using the following short-cut keys helps:

Command-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it as a file on the desktop
Command-Shift-4, then select an area: Take a screenshot of an area and save it as a file on the desktop
Command-Shift-4, then space, then click a window: Take a screenshot of a window and save it as a file on the desktop
Command-Control-Shift-3: Take a screenshot of the screen, and save it to the clipboard
Command-Control-Shift-4, then select an area: Take a screenshot of an area and save it to the clipboard
Command-Control-Shift-4, then space, then click a window: Take a screenshot of a window and save it to the clipboard

    Hope this helps.

I use a program called ScreenHunter.  It is a free program that offers you the option of saving the screen shot to your clipboard or to create a .jpg file.  The .jpg option is cool because you can then insert the image directly into an email and really emphasize what you are taking about.

I use Fraps and Camtasia software products. Both operate well, never had issues with Fraps or Camtasia Screen Recorder

Also, on any modern day Mac there is an application called Grab that comes with the OS that is a free screen capture tool for still image.
