Best Radar Detector Under $200 - Don't Get Caught

Updated on October 11, 2014

Looking For The Best Radar Detector Under $200?

I have to admit that I have a lead foot. When I first started driving I was ticketed multiple times for speeding and, as a result, my insurance shot through the roof. In order to save money I decided to try a radar detector and see if that would help me avoid those costly tickets. After several years of use and not a single ticket I was sold. I have had one ever since. These devices not only save you money from having to pay tickets but also save you money in insurance payments. Less tickets equal lower payments.

With all of the advances in technology the prices for high quality, long range models are on the rise. Some of the best ones I have come across can run anywhere from $400 to $700. But, at that price, you get all of the bells and whistles and some features most people won't even use. I have found that all anyone really needs is a great quality, well made unit that does what is says it does. Through personal experience and extensive research I have narrowed down the best radar detector under $200.

One of the most important factors I take into consideration before purchasing a radar detector is its range. When I am driving on the interstate it is important to me that I can get enough of an early warning so that I can adjust my speed in time to avoid getting pulled over. Many models available today just don't give an early enough warning and it is a pain to have to buy one before getting a chance to try it out.

Another important factor for me is ease of use. If I can't program it, adjust it, or filter it with just the push of a couple of buttons while driving then I don't want it. I am already driving at a high speed and don't need to be distracted by an overcomplicated electronic device.

I have used several different brands over the years and have found that Cobra, Whistler, and Beltronics consistently make the highest quality, best rated, and easy to use models on the market. If you are interested in getting a detector for yourself then I have listed a few good ones that I find to be top notch. Be sure to click on the links to see the full product details and get all of the great reviews.

Cobra XRS 9965 15-Band Radar and Laser Detector

I love this one! It has saved me a fortune in tickets!

Cobra makes some of the best models at the most reasonable prices. This unit identifies all of the radar and laser bands and is invisible to police detection devices. The program menu is super easy to use. This model also features a full 360 degree ability to detect laser signals. I have used this Cobra for a couple of years now and have had no problems out of it. Aside from the occasional false alarm I am completely satisfied with it. If you are looking for a unit that gives you a lot of bang for your buck, then this is it.

Beltronics Vector V940

Packed with features - Low price!

This is a fantastic model for the price. This unit gives very early warnings and it rarely gives a false warning. It is very well built and will withstand extreme temperatures from sitting in your car. The voice alerts are a great added feature. I never did really like all the beeps and odd sounds of the older models. This model will alert you to all of the police bands and lasers and is also invisible to police detection devices. This model is a steel and has some great features. This unit will last for many years and save you a lot of money in tickets.

Beltronics Vector 940

Beltronics RX65-Red Professional Series

Easy to use with a great range!

The RX65 is a great model for highway use. This unit has a much larger range than other comparable brands. Early detection is key when driving on the highway. You need as much time as possible to be able to slow down. This model detects all radar and laser signals and is very easy to use. Installation is a breeze with the quick release mount. It just attaches to your windshield via suction cups. This unit is available with a red display or a blue display. It even comes with a durable travel case. This model will easily become your favorite and save you time and money in the long run.

Whistler Pro-78SE High-Performance

Whistler makes some of the best on the market today!

This is a great one for the money. This model gives you protection from all of the bands used today. With this unit you have the option to select only the bands you want it to alert you to. This is a great feature if you are in an area where you are experiencing an above average amount of false alarms. This model also uses real voice warnings instead of those annoying beeps and white noise. It has a great range that will give you early warnings and give you enough time to adjust your speed. This is a great little unit for the price and will last for many years with the proper care.

Cobra Vedetta Ultimate Detection Systems Series

Absolutely love this one!

This is a great model with tons of features. I know this article is focused on models that are under $200 but I couldn't help myself with this amazing unit. It's only a few dollars over $200 and is well worth the extra money. It has a very long detection range and has 4 different filters to help ensure you get the best and most accurate early warnings. This unit will also warn you of red light cameras and speed cameras. In my opinion, the best feature of this model is that it looks like a standard GPS device attached to your windshield. After all, there is no need to draw unnecessary attention to your car if you don't have to. Be sure to click on the link and read all about this outstanding unit.
