Depends on your needs, of course. For instance, I'd never run a XP on a server.
I'd recommend trying CentOS out if you are interested in it - just visit http://www.centos.org/ - although if this is your first time with Linux, there are easier alternatives. For instance, I'd recommend giving Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/) a try.
It really depends on what features you use. CentOS is used primarily in servers whereas xp is used on desktops. If you're giving an RHCE exam CentOS is a great distro to get your hands dirty. If you want a good desktop OS, I personally would recommend you to go for Ubuntu rather than XP.
