A domain name will give you your own unique web address and you have the complete rights to it which can later be sold. It's not owned by someone else so you can include whatever content as you desire.

A good idea would be to have your own domain name and hosting, for example www.letterme.com or www.letterme.net and have a link to your blogspot blog on one of your webpages. This gives you more freedom to write any additional content which may not otherwise be so easy to do when you're restricted to simply a blogspot blog.

A unique domain name and content will also benefit you with google rankings and searches.

I've learned that people are more interested in your content than your domain.  If the content is generating real comments and being shared you've accomplished what most are seeking.

Reasons to actually purchase a domain for a blogspot blog would be to create a name people can easily remember.  Another reason could be that if you promote your blog on business cards, or printed media a domain name you created will look  more professional.  The biggest reason should be for seo purposes.  An exact match domain name with your target keyword in it could help with your ranking efforts.

I wish the most success possible with your blog and hope this info is helpful in some way.

    Thanks for the question.

You'll get more readers a lot quicker with a domain name. A lot of Blogspot blogs are spam so I don't think search engines favour rhem at first. In the long run I don't think it matters. If you have a quality blog on Blogspot it should do OK.

However, I've seen my Tumblr (also I have 1 Over-blog blog) do better earlier than Blogspot. It is the most popular and Google doesn't seem to favour it's own sites early on.

It took no work to get my Over-blog to PageRank 2!
