Are the new universal power plugs for laptops safe or could they damage my computer?
I had to get a new power plug for my laptop and when I stopped at a computer repair shop to see if they had one (telling him I had seen the universals at Wal Mart) he said he wouldn't trust them. Is there any significance to this or did he just want my business?
Not sure what you mean by universal plugs, I assume you mean the adapter plugs for foreign country outlets. If thats the case most of the generic "converters" work ok. Some do not have a ground plug so check. If you mean a new power supply make sure it outputs the same current as you existing adapter. I'm not a expert but give that a try.
If it's just a plug, whether it's a power plug or plug for the laptop's power jack... it's safe. Just make sure it is properly plugged and no loose connections.
If you're talking a bout the entire power adapter/charger, then it would be a different story. Better get one which is recommended by your laptop's manufacturer.

Is it safe to use a magnetic screwdriver near electronics (like laptops or smartphones)? This is a question for all you IT geeks out there. I'm replacing the cooling fan on my laptop and I was just worried I was just worried about wiping out the memory or something like that.
