    The only way to get anywhere near a real zero energy home is to migrate to a third world country where people live in small handmade dwellings made from all natural material.  They have no electricity, use water from the local well. 

    If you live in the west then you will not get zero energy homes but what I will term as 'Near-zero energy' homes. In which you use products that allow you to reduce your energy consumption.  You reduce your usage of products and material that are not made from natural resources, are not recyclable.
