    What is a ping and how can it help you?

    I keep seeing the phrase ping, but I have no idea what it means. Any information would be helpful.

    To poke someone via various modes of communication. "Ping her via IM". (In my opinion)

      This is actually more related to SEO so I don't know if that's the right answer.

      If it's related to SEO, ping is the process of letting the search engine i.e. Google know that there were recent changes onto your website/webpage. We ping pages for faster caching/indexing of the updated content. You may use certain resources.

    PING stands for Packet Internet Groper. It  helps to check the connection strength between the computers connected in a LAN. While checking results in ping ,if the sent and received data is equal then the connection is Good(i.e there is no loss in data packets). If your results is  not equal then there is some  data loss occurs in the results and there is no connection between the PC/website .You can check the Ping of the Internet Connection easily.To check Local LAN Connection Ping by using the Following method
    GO to start->run->cmd->Ping ip-address
    If  you need to check Ping for website visit  here http://www.whoisxy.com  and do the Ping test for any site.

    OK it is used when tech's are working on computers to get them to operate correctly, it is an address they type into your command prompt option and then hit enter and it usually fixes the comp really well. I have not done it alone except a few times when they ask you to type it in yourself. Its a life saver for pc's/

    Pingler.Com is a service--free version and paid version, that pings the web address of your Hub to numerous sites. I have used it a few times. I really do not know how effective it is.

    Ping is a command you use to see if the signal is getting from your computer to other sites. You type your ip address from the Windows command line and if everything is working correctly, you will get notices about the number of packets sent in a few seconds. If you get a timed-out message, it means something is wrong on some end. If you know several IP addresses and they all time out, it means there is a problem with your computer or network.

    The term 'ping' is before the internet happened. On telephone wires that were broken, and electronic signal is put out. Since the wire is broken - and echo is returned. Based on the echo, the distance  is measured.

    I.E. from "The Hunt for Red October", Captain to sonar man, "One ping only - one ping"

    In internet terms, used to find out where your connection is broken,  also used in kiddie scripts forDDS -  Distributed Denial of Service, is an attack where multiple compromised systems ping a system that MUST answer and thereby bring down the router or host.

    If want to play with pinging - don't need a paid service, you can use traceroute or get a free visual traceroute that show a map of all the  nodes to take to get from say USA to Russia.

    is a demo but traceroute &  whois can be used to check if your facebook 'friend' is a Nigerian or Russian love scammer.

    At http://www.spy-ip.com if I type in the IP address of 175.85.251.111 then that is in Beijing. But beware just because it has a country code of .ng the physical location is in kansas for 67.1.251.53 - http://www.nigeria.gov.ng

    I think this question is a very good question. The results I see have educated me. The only response with my knowledge is the game ping-pong and later one of the first table electronic games = pong. I do remember as ptosis pointing out the movie line. Used as a sonar technique is it? I like to listen to VLF signals for relaxation and at times wonder if near to the same thing as pinging.

    do have a good day . . . one smile at a time
