How can we make sure a site is legitimate? One malware program has a real site and fake ones.
It is so bad that hackers seem to find loopholes everywhere. If you find a site that explains the schemes, they are very complicated and sophisticated. Look at Heart Bleed, Cryptolocker and fake download browsers.
When I find a website questionable, and before I even visit the site, I check out the ownership first. I want to see three basic things... Is it owned by the company represented by the domain? Is it in the country as expected? Was it recently registered or expiring soon?
You can start by getting the IP address and then search the Whois of the IP. Most "Whois" search sites will give you the information directly from the domain name. So you can skip getting the IP address.
Do a google on "getip" and "Whois" - there are several good sites to get both this information.
