Dell is a very very good computer. I'm currently using a ten year old Acer, which has been terrific. I'd feel good about recommending either of those brands to anyone.
Do not, under any circumstances, buy a Dell. While their older computers were pretty decent, I bought a new computer from them two years ago, and it was a piece of junk. Their systems come loaded with bloatware. I got nothing but the recurring Blue Screen of Death, for about two weeks, as I hunted down bugs. Their support was useless. I finally sent it back for a refund.
I also bought a color laser from them about a year ago, and spent a whole weekend trying to get it to print from my computer. It printed test pages just fine, but my Dell computer wouldn't recognize a Dell printer! Sent that back, also.
