      you can generate Electricity and then drink it... it'll be long lasting source then.

        I live in the NE US, where much of our power is hydro, and I do appreciate the low cost - we have about the cheapest power in the country.

        But it isn't free, and there are lots of hidden costs to hydro - costs that are very often overlooked or ignored...until we're forced to deal with them.  With dams comes lakes, taking valuable farmland.  Rivers silt up without floods to scour riverbeds.  The power available varies considerably from weather changes year to year, making additional capacity necessary.  Fish populations change or disappear, cause wide reaching effects through the entire wildlife environment.  As water is "robbed" for irrigation or simple drinking water the capacity of dams and generators falls and we face the question of "water or power?".

        Hydro is cheaper than most other sources, but it is far from free.
