Updated on June 13, 2013

Waterproof, shockproof digital cameras can go where you go

Many people enjoy rugged outdoor sports, but most cameras aren't designed to go surfing in the ocean or mountain biking in the mud or climbing on a freezing cold mountaintop. Those aren't the sort of locations you'd want to take your camera phone or nice SLR that can could be ruined with a little sand or water in the camera. So what's an outdoor person to do? Thankfully, manufacturers are coming up with waterproof shockproof digital cameras that can go just about anywhere. Today's models can offer amazing resolution (up to 16 megapixels), cool features such as built-in GPS, one-touch HD video recording, and even 3D photo images. It all depends on how much you want to spend, and what features you need. Here's a list of some waterproof shockproof cameras currently available.

Pentax Optio W-G 2. It is amazing! Just the thing to take hiking. Only drawback is the same as all other point and shoot....the shooting speed is slower than a SLR. But, it is less cumbersome and I don't have to worry about it getting messed up!

I like that you have the questions that people can ask themselves in order to know what they should look for in a digital camera.

I have taken pictures under water, but we put the camera in a water proof container. I think a water proof camera would be cool to have.

I don't have a waterproof camera, but would have so loved to have had one when we went snorkeling!

I can verify the canon powershot is waterproof and shockproof, although I have succeeded in scratching the raised metal lip around the lens by dropping it hard on the rocks while tidepooling. The lip protected the lens from my klutziness.

It's a bit heavy and blobby compared to non-waterproof cameras, but it's my everyday camera these days. It's fun to drop it in the stingray touch pool in the aquarium.
