Best Places to Spend a Sunny San Francisco Day

Updated on April 18, 2017

Enjoy a meal or a drink on a patio

There are lots of great restaurants with outdoor spaces in San Francisco, and they're the perfect place to eat on a sunny day. You can get just about any kind of food you want, so go find the one that's right for you and enjoy!

El Techo

Located in the Mission, El Techo has an amazing rooftop patio with delicious Mexican food and amazing drinks. It's the perfect place to sit and enjoy lunch while you look out at the amazing views of the city.

Epic Steakhouse

On the Embarcadero in SOMA, Epic is a top-notch steakhouse with a small, covered outdoor patio that looks right out onto the water. Their dinner is expensive, but lunch is a great chance to get a cocktail and a burger for a reasonable price.

Right next to Epic, Waterbar is, as you can imagine, a seafood restaurant with a fantastic outdoor area. They've got great oysters and Bloody Marys, along with a host of other seafood dishes and drinks. A perfect spot to enjoy with a date or a group of friends.

The Sycamore

When you enter The Sycamore, you'll find yourself in a dark bar, wondering why I sent you there. Fear not - get a drink at the bar and head out back to the large patio. The Sycamore is in the Mission and has great drinks plus a fantastic bottomless mimosa brunch.

Enjoy nature!

For a dense city, San Francisco makes it surprisingly easy to find some nature. There are parks everywhere, not to mention the beautiful water that surrounds the city. If it's sunny outside, get yourself to the grass or the sand! Here are a few of the best options:

Golden Gate Park

It's San Francisco's best known, and it's huge. You've got more than enough space to enjoy the grass and the sand. Stroll along it or have a picnic - it doesn't matter what you do; you can't help but have a great time surrounded by happy people who are excited to be outside.

Ocean Beach

On a nice day, there's nothing better than a trip to the beach, and Ocean Beach is San Francisco's best. It covers most of the western coast of SF, so there's more than enough space for you to throw a towel down, set up an umbrella and take a nap in the sun. If you're more active, bring that frisbee or football and throw it around.

Lafayette Park

If you're closer to the middle of the city, Lafayette park is a great option. It's not nearly as big as Golden Gate Park, but it's got everything you need - an off-leash dog park, a play area for children and lots of tables to enjoy a meal outside. There's also a ton of open grass plus quieter, secluded areas that are perfect to relax and read a book.

Go to the zoo!

San Francisco has one of the best zoos in California, and it's the perfect place to spend a beautiful day. It's huge, and there's just about any kind of animal you can think of, from polar bears to flamingos to red pandas. They've got a huge indoor area for tropical birds and reptiles, plus plenty of shows where you can watch the animals being fed.

There are a ton of special programs and events, so go online and check out what's happening before you visit. Also, make sure you buy your tickets online - this is a place that everyone wants to be on a nice day, so the line to get tickets can be long.

The best thing about visiting the SF Zoo is that you'll not only have a great time and learn something new about animals, you're also supporting a great cause that helps to make the world and San Francisco a better place! If you love it, think about becoming a member to get access to exclusive zoo events and free visits throughout the year. Trust me, you won't regret it!
