Cannes, France

No trip to the French Riviera would be complete without a visit to Cannes. Located in the south of France, the city is a mecca for those with a taste for upscale, relaxed Mediterranean living. The city lies 25 km east of the Nice Airport but is equally accessible by plane or boat. A convenient bus shuttle between the airport and Cannes departs every half hour and the city's marina welcomes yachts if you have made arrangements for a short stay.

Once in the city, it is time to sit back and enjoy the warm sun and surf. Cannes only has one public beach but there are many private beaches owned by local hotels. The public beach is located on the east end of town and features a large expanse of soft white sand and chaise lounges for your sun bathing pleasure.Be sure to inquire when making your accommodations whether or not your hotel offers a private beach.

If you are interested in shopping, the elegant promenade known as La Croissette stretches from one end of Cannes to the other and boasts exclusive shopping and fine dining establishments. Popular designers such as Hermes, Dior and Chanel abound.Because many shops cater to A-List celebrities from Hollywood, visitors may well rub elbows with the world's most rich and famous, especially in spring when the city hosts the famed Cannes Film Festival. The festival takes place at the Palais des Festivals et des Congres which is located on the famed Boulevard de la Croissette alongside exclusive boutiques and delectable restaurants.

Those seeking a less expensive entertainment may enjoy the commercial district that is home to variety of French pastry shops a library, fish sellers, and smaller vendors.

The older section of Cannes, Le Suquet, offers many walking tours. Be sure to stop at La Castre Castle. Located in castle's tower is the Castre Museum which features a vast array of Mediterranean and international art. The museum is situated on the hilltop so visitors may enjoy sweeping vistas of the bay as well as of the Lerins Islands.

Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I was lucky enough to be in France within the past 18 months and we loved it. I would love to see the Italian Riviera someday as well. So much time but so little money these days. But someday...

Possibly the most exquisite vacation spot in Europe. One of the only other destinations I can think of that matches Frances scenic perfection is the "Italian Riviera" and some of her other secluded gems like Capri.

Fantastic virtual trip to Cannes, I enjoyed it immensely.
