Hotels in Habarana Sri Lanka

Updated on June 13, 2010

Nature friendly hotels

Hotels in Habarana are famous because of the nature friendly design of the hotels , the two most popular hotels in the area Amaya Lake and the cinnamon lodge are all designed in a very nature friendly way. In fact cinnamon lodge hotel is considered as one of the most nature friendly hotels in the SriLanka because of the amount of effort that way put to preserve the nature as much as possible while building the the hotel. Being nature friendly and close to the forest doesn't mean that these hotels lack the necessary facilities , all are equipped with great facilities and these are considered among few of the most expensive hotels outside the Colombo area.

Habarana is popular among tourists and locals alike for lots of reasons. Its unique location give it access to few of the most visited tourist places in Sri Lanka. Its relatively close to five of the seven world heritage sites in Sri Lanka and with lots of national parks and reserves around it is one of the best places to stay for tourists who are looking to see wildlife in Sri Lanka. Below are few great hotels to stay while you are in Habarana.

Cinnamon Lodge hotel

As I mentioned before Cinnamon Lodge is one of the most beautiful and nature friendly hotels in Habarana , You have a lake as one border and jungles surrounding the rest of the borders. There are wide open spaces and ponds in the hotel grounds giving you the feeling of staying inside a forest. The chalets are surrounded by trees and the peacocks and monkeys roam freely in the hotel grounds. There are wide variety of activities available with the bird and butterfly trail being kind of unique to the hotel. Wild life safaris , visit to the ancient sites are arranged by the hotels and it is always a safer option to arrange them via the hotel.

Amaya Lake Hotel

Another hotel that resides near a lake Amaya lake also is also built similar to most other luxury hotels in the Habarana area with cottage like houses spread out in a vast area. It doesn't quite have the beautiful ponds and the lavish green surroundings of Cinnamon Lodge but still it is build in a very nature friendly way where the guests will feel they are part of the nature. There is a huge ground near the lake which is ideal for company outings and it is frequently used by companies for there annual outings etc.As with most Sri Lankan hotels the food is great and the staff is very helpful and attentive to your needs.

Chaaya Village Hotel

As the name suggests the hotel is build like village with separate cottages. Huge forest like areas are easy to find in Habarana and the hotels have taken the full usage of those while making sure not to harm the nature. The cottages are build in a lush green environment and the paths are maintained and cleaned everyday so you can fully enjoy your stay there. According to most of my friends Chaaya Village has the edge when it comes to service and they strive hard to maintain those standards. As with almost all the hotels in Habarana this also resides near a lake and the open areas near the lake are great for a relaxing holiday.

Places to visit in Habarana

Habarana is a hot tourist destination because of its locations , there are plenty of things to do and plenty of places to visit while you are in Habarana. World heritage sites like Sigiriya rock fortress ,Dambulla rock temple , ancient city of Anuradhapura and ancient city of Pollonnaruwa are located pretty close to Habarana. If you are pressed for time then the must visit place should be the Sigiriya rock fortress which is considered a must see place for tourists in Sri Lanka. It is famous for its advance irrigation system and the fresco art found there are considered as one of the best in the world. There is a museum if you are interested in getting some historical facts about the place.

Ancient city of Anuradhapura and Pollonnaruwa provide a different sort of challenge because there are lots for you to see there. If you are considering visiting there then it is always a good idea to ask the hotel for a guide because otherwise things could be a bit overwhelming.

Things to do in Habarana

If traveling around the country is not your things then Habarana offers lots of activities as well. Habarana is most famous for its elephant population and elephant back rides are very popular among tourists. Riding one of these majestic but gentle creatures is a truly amazing experience. Bird and butterfly watching is another activity popular among nature lovers. Because of the surrounding lakes there's a huge bird population and some hotels provide you the facility of watching birds while going on a boat ride in the lake. If watching birds is not enough then you can go on wild life safaris in the near by nature reserves. Habarana is popular as a great place to watch elephants in Sri Lanka. Typically you will find elephants , deer , buffalo , peacocks , wild boar , crocodiles in nature reserves.
