Learning Resources in Newquay Cornwall

Although Newquay is a small town by most standards, it has roughly the same population as St Austell and Truro, but doesn't have a College like they do.  It can be a backwater for courses and learning resources.

But, if you can't travel to Truro, St Austell, or even Redruth, then what learning resources will you actually find in Newquay?  My focus here is on adult education, post-16 education.  Learning resources for vocational needs as well as for hobbies and interests.

I hope it helps you to understand what's available and where it is.  Knowledge is power - and maybe there's somewhere listed here that you simply didn't know existed, offering a course you're interested in doing.

You might be forgiven for having missed this tiny building, right beside the Police Station, which is beside Newquay Railway Station. The Centre can be hard to spot as it's tiny and the sign says "Adult Education Centre/Registry", not the Community Learning Centre sign you might have been expecting.

There's a car park on the corner of Tolcarne Road, which is pay and display.

Treviglas partners with University of Plymouth, delivering University-level courses in a narrow range of subjects. Treviglas has a Business Academy, a Surf Academy and Technicians' Academy. Adult learners can take part in the studies at the Academies, resulting in 3 A levels and a guaranteed place at the University of Plymouth for a Surfing degree for the surf academy, whereas the IT Academy has students studying for two years to attain OCR National Level 3 qualificatiaons and CISCO Certified Network Associate status (CCNA).

There is a range of evening classes available too, through the Adult Education service.

This is a school, so there is plenty of free on-site parking.

Tretherras is a Specialist Technology College There are a range of adult education evening classes run at Tretherras during normal term times. Details are available from the Adult Education service.

Tretherras have also partnered with the University of Worcestershire to provide a Foundation Degree course for those interested in teaching - and another one targetting people interested in working in Childrens' Services.

This is a school, so there is plenty of on-site free parking.

The Old Chapel was converted, about a decade ago, into the Open Learning Centre for Truro College. They offer a range of courses such as ECDL and CLAIT and they tend to be self-paced courses, so you turn up when you want and get on with the materials on your own - and there's a Tutor on hand if you have questions.

Courses run all year round are: Skills for Life, English as a 2nd Language Accountancy and the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL). Other courses are scheduled throughout the year, including Spanish, Creative Digital Photography and even Animal First Aid.

There's no real parking on site, the nearest public car park is at the end of Ennors Road, about 50 yards away. The centre is also just about 50 yards away from the main bus station in Newquay.

As there's a zoo in Newquay, Cornwall College run some applied biology courses from the site. As such, there are no courses here for the general public, but I included the location and brief details for completeness.

This is a private organisation that provide NVQs, Management Courses and courses wtih Certification. Operational for over 10 years, they are focussed on providing hospitality training and training for management of hospitality businesses.

Their clients tend to be the businesses themselves, so a hotel will use NFET to provide their staff with training, rather than individuals knocking on their door and asking about training courses.They provide training for NVQs in food preparation and cooking, food and drink service, housekeeping, front office and customer service. They also offer VRQs (Voctaionally Related Qualifications) for hospitality customer service, selling, conflict handling, customer service and selling.

Agusta Westland opened their Operational Flying Training Centre at Newquay Airpot in April 2010. They provide helicopter training for crews, including winch operations and mission training and helicopter pilot training.

Their clients will be the military and public sector - so, again, this isn't for members of the public to phone up and ask about going on courses, but was included out of interest and completeness.

This private organisation offers personal development courses, such as yacht sailing courses, first aid and rescue training. All courses are certified. While most of their courses are for clients who are businesses or are large/public sector bodies, there are some courses of interest to individuals.

They also offer the National Beach Lifeguard Qualification, Beach Training Assessor Award and BSA 1 and BSA 2 Surf Instructor courses.
