Updated on September 7, 2014

The Philippines

The Philippines, also known as Philippine Islands (formally known as Republic of the Philippines), is a tropical country in Southeast Asia consisting of more than seven thousand islands (7,107 to be exact). It is grouped into three geographical regions, Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The group of islands north of the country is called Luzon Islands, the central group is called the Visayas Islands, and the rest of the country in the south is called Mindanao Islands.

The Philippines was a Spanish colony until it was ceded by Spain to the United States of America in 1898. It became a Commonwealth government in 1935 and eventually became independent of the Americans in 1946.

The Philippines is a popular tourist destination in Asia. Not to mention the captivating sceneries across the country, the Philippines boasts of hospitable Filipinos (what the locals are called) who speak English.
