Remembering My First Ski Trip

Remembering the trip
We took family ski trips to a resort called Ski Bowl at Mt. Hood in Oregon. The drive was in those days and likely still is quite and adventure if you aren't used to driving in snow. The scenes were spectacular with ice ponds. I remember the trees heavy laden with snow. The sunlight made everything in the landscape sparkle and glisten with ice crystals. It was pure magic to me.
The year was about 1955. These were the days before we had wonderful insulated boots and great fashion in ski clothing. My parents helped me to learn to ski. I would be half frozen between runs and hardly be able to walk into the lodge to sit by the fireside. You very quickly became very chilled in the freezing temperatures and winds. We layered ourselves in awkward clothes ,wool hats and mittens. These clothes made it difficult for me to gain my sense of balance.
Mom and dad who were both ski racers in their high school days taught me to ski. Dad let me ride on the front of his skis for my first few trips to the mountain. Soon they bought me my own set of short skis. I had to learn very young the frustration of how to get up by yourself when you fall. What a difficult and sometimes tearful process that was! I am sure they didn't enjoy their trips during some of these little lessons. They patiently gave me just enough teaching balanced with fun and hot chocolate to allow me to enjoy the adventures.
One day while skiing a long wooded trail called the Magic Mile which connected Timberline Lodge to Government Camp we encountered a terrible blizzard. I was only five years old. That blustery day still remains vivid in my memory. I had to learn to conquer some fears of not being able to see where I was going on skis! By the time we were half way down the trail I was feeling freezing and tired. Dad took me into the lodge just in time to avoid frostbite. He bought me a hot chocolate and we roasted our half frozen clothes and boots by the blazing fire to recover.
