Sometimes what you want when you go out is casual. You want flip flops instead of fancy heels. You want comfy (but still sexy) jeans rather than designer dresses. You want no-cover live music at the dive bars or outdoor festival concerts in place of pricey tickets to major venues. And you want to put away the wine glasses and forgo the martini shakers in favor of just popping the tab on a good cold can of beer. San Francisco has a lot of fancy bars and restaurants but we known how to get casual when it counts. Check out these top bars for beer can drinking. Skip crushing the can on your forehead, though; we aren’t that casual around here.

1. 21st Amendment Brewery, 563 2nd St. (@ Brannan St.)

What says casual more than spitting watermelon seeds on the front lawn during the summer? Okay, so San Francisco doesn’t have many lawns and we don’t have much in the way of summer but the summer experience can still be had with the Watermelon Wheat beer at this local brewery. Yes, a microbrewery that cans its own stuff; is that San Francisco or what? They report that canning beer keeps it fresher and better tasting than bottling it. What do you think?

2. Bar None, 1980 Union St. (@ Laguna St.) Marina 415.409.4469

Where better to look for beer in a can than in the neighborhood where all of the frat kids hang out? Really, a beer pong bar without canned brew would just be wrong. PBR in a can is what you want to get here if you want to relive those early cans-only drinking days of yours.

3. Butter, 354 11th St. (@ Folsom St.), SoMA 415.863.5964

Here is a place where you can eat like there’s no tomorrow and follow up each greedy bite with a swig of your canned beer. They have an entire menu of “deep fried” stuff, including, yes, the deep fried twinkie. There is nothing more gluttonous than this. Of course, you aren’t required to eat twinkies and tater tots to enjoy your canned beer at this SoMA dive bar.

4. Velvet Cantina, 3349 23rd St. (@ Mission St.) The Mission 415.648.4142

If there’s a kind of beer that just really belongs in a can, it’s Mexican beer. Think about it, would you really want Tecate on tap? Of course not. You want your cheap Mexican beer in a can. Velvet Cantina has beer like Modelo in cans for your Latin drinking pleasure. The prices aren’t quite out of Mexico, but they’re lower than most spots so you can drink more and remember less.

5. Hotsy Totsy Club, 601 San Pablo Ave. (@ Castro St.) Albany 510.524.1661

If you really want to get that whole dive bar, drinking from a can experience, you need to head out of the city. Face it; even with its beer cans and deep friend twinkies, San Francisco is just a little too fancy (and a lot too chilly) to get the real summer experience here. This East Bay spot meets those lower base needs of yours for summer fun.
