Save While Caravanning Around Australia

Updated on April 23, 2012

people who are working and caravaning around australia

Are you longing to set off and work your way around Australia ? Or maybe you don't need to work but just want tips on saving money while you travel !

There are many ways of saving money as you travel while still having a great time on your travels & I will add more as we discover them for ourselves !

One major way of saving money is by free camping while traveling as caravan sites are getting so expensive for most people on the road.

There are some beautiful free camping spots by rivers , lakes and even just nice countryside to relax and unwind in overnight.

However if you are wanting to work in the towns you will need to stay in a caravan park unless you can find a caretaking position where you can live in your caravan free of charge.

It cost $45 a night in Broome for a patch of grass & a bit of power .It is a lot of money when you are on a budget .

Do your own repairs

Before you set off on your trip make sure your vehicle and caravan / camp trailer is in good condition & you have spare parts, tyres etc.

Know how to do the basics like changing a tyre, doing the oil change etc.

We had problems with our radiator & Neville was able to fix the problem saving us a lot of money.

Having a tyre repair kit will help especially driving along the Gibb River road .

You will save money by buying the parts in the bigger cities rather than in a small town.

Cooking on the road

It can be fun coming up with new ideas for meals as you travel . As nice as it is to eat out occasionally most of us can't afford to do it to often .

It helps to keep a good stock of spices , sauces etc on hand to add flavour for your meals.

Where possible cook your meals & boil your water on an open fire ( in season ) & save on gas.

This is a good time to cook extra food even bake a cake on the fire for later on when you don't feel like cooking or you are free camping where there is no fires allowed.

Watch out for specials as you travel , meal deals or other things you will be needing.

It is often cheaper to enjoy lunch out at a restaurant rather than Dinner as well as being quieter and more relaxing.

Working as you travel.

As we are traveling we see people earning money in diferent ways such as the lady doing haircuts at the caravan park in Broome and Kununurra.

Some follow the harvest route around Australia picking a variety of fruit and vegetables.

Camphosting for free accommodation can work , we also got paid four our camphosting.

Check out notice boards at supermarkets , cafes, caravan parks as you travel as there is often work advertised as well as outside of businesses looking for workers.

Offer your services on the noticeboards at the caravan park/ supermarket if you are a hairdresser/ mechanic etc.
