Shanghumugham beach in Trivandrum: Tourist spots of Kerala
Shanghumugham beach
Shanghumugham beach - hangouts of Trivandrum
Shanghumugham beach is one of the usual hangouts of people in Trivandrum, Kerala, India. It is located within 8km from the heart of Trivandrum city. Again Shanghumugham beach is very near to Trivandrum, Airport and the Veli Tourist Village. It is one of the famous nostalgic places of sunset watchers. Watching Sunset and spending time with family members in the beach has become a routine for most of the people in Trivandrum.
Main attraction over here is the beach itself; authorities had created seating arrangements in rocks, facing the beach to view the scenic beauty of the beach. Also there are long steps created to walk along the border of the shore. In the morning you could see fishermen, getting their boats and fish back from the sea. The song they sing, while pulling the rope attached to the boat is really interesting to listen and watch them doing so in same manner.
Just opposite to the beach, there is a restaurant with the shape of a starfish, and along with there is a children’s park is also functioning. Also most of the beach lovers don’t leave the beach without having a cup of tea or Masala Dosai from the Indian Coffee House, functioning opposite to the beach, facing the sunset view. Having food, from the balcony of Indian coffee house, facing the sea is a remarkable experience.

Just beside the Indian Coffee house, one could see, 35 meter long sculpture of “Matsya Kanyaka” (Mermaid), done by the sculptor, Mr Kanayi Kunjiraman, in the park. On the other side of the road, one could see a “Kal-mandapam” (Rock Porch). Again going towards, the Chacha Nehru Traffic Training Park attracts children a lot.
Other than scenic beauty, beach does have historical value and cultural tradition of the city. It is where the famous festival “Arattu” (Holy Bath) occurs. In which the king of Travancore, comes along with the foot procession, and later the idols of holy Gods are given a holy bath. The procession is of great importance to the city, as the city will be closed, by giving holiday to government offices, schools and even airports to give way to procession.
One should not miss the beach, if they come to Trivandrum.
