High gas prices have made a lot of families make vacation plans closer to home this year. If you live in the Missouri you're lucky to have so many great places to visit in the Midwest. Midwest family vacations can take you to the city, the great outdoors, and all points in between. The best Midwest vacation is the one that engages your family and offers something for everyone. If you like to spend time on the water or watching the world class shows of Branson, Table Rock Lake in Missouri is one of the best places to visit in the Midwest.

Natural Beauty Close to the Entertainment Capital of the World

Set in the gorgeous Ozark Mountains of Missouri and Arkansas, Table Rock Lake winds its way along about 800 miles of shoreline. You'll find Table Rock Lake just west of Branson and south of Springfield Missouri. Table Rock was created for the control of floods and the generation of hydro electric power. Lucky for families, this lake is excellent for recreational activities of all kinds. Table Rock Lake provides excellent boating and fishing opportunities. In addition the clear waters are described as being ‘smooth as glass'. Skin divers will love the many coves, and underwater rock bluffs.

The great thing about Table Rock Lake is it's proximity to the Branson attractions. You get to sort of double dip on your vacation. You can get all your nature loving done in the morning and head out to see top notch family-friendly entertainment at night. And the buffets... let's just say Branson has more than music revues in common with Las Vegas.

Things to Do at or Near Table Rock Lake:

Boating: Most campgrounds, resorts, and cabin rentals have a place for you to park your boat. Many have slips available for a nominal fee. Don't have a boat? Rent it! Pontoon boats, ski boats, and bass fishing boats are all plentifully available on Table Rock Lake.

Fishing: Nothing says family bonding like sitting around together with a few poles in the water - waiting for something to happen. Even if it's just for part of one day, try your hand at catching fish.

Watersports: Water skiing is great, but can have quite a learning curve. If you don't have much time you may want to opt for tubing instead. Check your local sporting goods shop, club store, or Wal-Mart for deals. Make sure to pick up an electric inflator.

Branson - This country style Vegas is one of the top vacation destinations in the country. Close to seven million tourists visit annually. Set in the gorgeous Ozark mountains. The flavor of Branson is wholesome. Shows are available for all ages and families will appreciate live performances in any of the city's 49 state-of-the-art theaters.

Silver Dollar City - This 1880s-themed amusement park offers 50 acres, over 100 craftsmen, and festivals from April through December. Check out the Bluegrass & BBQ Festival, National Kids' Fest, and even a Salute to the Great American Cowboy. When kids bore of the lake, splash it up in the adjoining water park.

Branson is a great place to visit. There are many things to do along the strip. I enjoyed the wax museum and the butterfly house. Another great place to visit is Lake of the Ozarks. It is similar to Branson in many ways.

Branson looks like a pretty cool place. It is too bad that the travel industry is taking such a big hit this year. The economy could really use the boost.
