The Best Place in the State: Michigan
Warren Dunes is a state park located along the very southwest coast of Michigan. Boasting over 1900 acres of recreational fun, Warren Dunes is famous for its large dunes scattered throughout the park. These natural wonders create a paradise for adventures seekers, and over one million visitors experience the park annually.
Despite its popularity, with minimal effort it is possible to escape the tourists and experience Warren Dunes in a much more intimate setting. If you have one day, be sure to climb Tower Hill (The largest and highest dune at 240 feet), and if possible treat yourself to a run down its sandy faces. The picture above was taken at Tower Hill's summit. As you can see, this ain't no anthill we're talking about here!
But to fully enjoy Warren Dunes to its full potential, you need to spend two to three full days. I know your thinking that this is just a state park. But it is so much more than that. This park maintains one of the best maintained beaches I have ever had the pleasure to encounter. The sand is soft, rock free, and enchanting. The waves never fail to be enormous, and the sand bars stretch out hundreds of feet into the water. When I picture a perfect beach for a day of family fun, this beach stands out far above the rest. However if playing in the sand, or surfing on the waves isn't your idea of fun, do not worry! Warren Dunes has much more fun to offer. Camping is available just outside the dunes and miles of hiking trails wind you from dunes to forest and back to dunes. Metal detecting has become quite popular over the years. If you have interest in finding your own buried treasure, check out this map of where metal detecting is allowed. (map) Additionally, cross country skiing, hang gliding, and clay painitng, are all prevalent in the park.
No matter the season, Warren Dunes has something to offer to everyone. That is why I choose it as THE BEST PLACE IN THE STATE, in Michigan.
