Those Who Wander Are Healthier
Stress levels are high, you are overworked with less time for yourself, and negativity present in every corner of our lives. You have two weeks of vacation time but don't feel you can afford to get away. Well think again, you can not afford not to! There are countless studies that show the links between stress and high blood pressure, heart disease, mental illness, and even cancer. In recent surveys 41% of respondents’ felt they were more productive and 54% felt rejuvenated and reconnected to their families after returning from vacation. Vacations are a necessity for good health and well-being.
If you are suffering from vacation deprivation, check your calendar. No Excuses! Come on, schedule your break, you’ve earned it. Yes, I know what you are thinking; it can be stressful trying to plan a vacation, especially traveling with children. It would just be one more thing added to your to-do list, right? Maybe not, here are some ideas to assist you in planning your vacation.
Sit down with your family and have each person make a list of two or three places they would like to go for vacation. Create your family "must see" list. Remember to include destinations not too far from home. Some examples include a nearby state park, a ski resort, or a city within driving distance you have been dying to see. This list gives you options for years and gives everyone something to plan and look forward to. Just doing this activity can relieve some stress and encourage fun dialogue with your kids. Kids feel stress too!
The best things in life are free and that includes information on the destination you choose for your vacation. If you don't have time to do the planning and research yourself, call a travel agent and give them your criteria as far as budget and length of stay. Travel agents are happy to help you find and book your vacation without a fee but you have to book with them. Just remember, travel agents are paid by the airlines, cruise lines and hotels so they only get paid if you make you’re booking them. The rates are usually the same or sometimes even less than you find online. Many agencies offer payment plans so you can book a year in advance and pay over time for those destinations that cost a little more.
If you are really trying to watch your pennies, consider camping trip to a state park, or a week off at home making day trips to surrounding attractions in your area. There are also some cruise lines offering very inexpensive 4 day cruises from Florida which include all meals for as little as $250 per person. Home rentals are available at many destinations which can also save you money vs. hotel rooms and eating out. Another way to save some money is discounted tickets and city passes, some cities offer a pass which allows you free or reduced admission to many sights and museums in the city. For example, Orlando, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas all offer these types of passes.
The most important tip is to leave the tablet and laptop at home or limit screen time while you are away. These addictive electronics are a distraction from true relaxation and keep you engaged in the stress you are trying to escape. Think of the week as an investment in your health and family; enjoy your time thoroughly so you can return to work refreshed and with a fabulous attitude.
