Top beaches in Sri Lanka - Negombo beach

Negombo occupies Sri Lanka’s largest fish market and it is the nearest town to the country’s only international airport – Bandaranayaka international air port- Katunayaka. It is a busy tourist town , famous for its seafood, fresh fruit and health retreats. It is a year-around destination with golden sandy beaches . There is a famous cannel along the main hotel street where wooden catamarans travel daily which is a major tourist actraction.

Who goes there?

Due to the town’s proximity to the airport, many visits Negombo for a night or two either relax after a tired journey to the air port or to guarantee being on time for an international departure. It is also popular with sun seekers escaping cold European winters, family groups, health fanatics, church lovers and many others.

Where it is situated?

Negombo is a fishing town on the western coast of Sri Lanka.It is just a 20 minutes ride to the International Air Port and 37 Km to the capital of Sri Lanka – Colombo.

When to go?

The weather stays evenly hot and humid throughout the year, There are no specific seasons. Apart from the heavy rains between May and August and again between October to January the visitors will find it suitable to visit anytime during the year.

The best beaches are found along the main hotel street and hiring of any sort of water sport equipment is possible. Negombo is a very good diving spot and you can find beautiful corals and colorful fish as well.The people who like to follow a swimming course or a diving course it can be arranged for a reasonable budget from many hotels.

Beyond the beach

As a result of Sri Lanka being governed by Dutch several centuries earlier, tourist will find the remnants of Dutch Era. There is the Dutch fort built in 1642 and some stunning Churches. Bird watching along the cannel is popular among tourists. Muthurajawela is a 6000 hectare protected marshland and visits to it can be arranged. It is the homeland for some endemic birds.

Family fun

There are many hotels along the Hotel Road which offer many facilities to families. You can arrange supervised water sports sessions, nature walks boat rides, cycling, windsurfing and even diving.

Things to buy

Many local souvenirs like wooden masks, handmade puppets , colorful sarongs, jewellary, Sri Lankan tea, spices are good buys.

A night on the town

There are cultural shows at nights in many hotels with live music and many other activities like Kandyan dancing and fire walking.
