Personally I'm a firm believer in Google.  Coming from a bacground where being limited to roads just isn't my style, I like that Google offers more than just turning right at the light since you can park your car in a city or it's periphery and jump on a train with Google tagging along.  once you get off at the nearest station to your destination, just select directions for traveling on foot and Google leads the way yet again.  if you're looking to go Road Tripping, you may want to look into Rand McNally's website.  It allows you to suffle and rearrange your stops as the situation changes.  I've used it everytime I've driven cross country and Google once I'm in the area.
