What requirements were there for taking your cats to the Bahama's? I want to do that myself.
We take two cats with us to the Bahamas each winter. The process is much easier than it sounds by reading the application form instructions. Basically, you get a permit from the Bahamas Department of Agriculture, take your pet to their vet for a checkup, and your vet fills out the health form. The exam includes making sure all required shots are up to date and testing a fecal sample. It's pretty straight forward.
When you clear customs, you show them the health form and that's that.
Here is an excerpt of the instructions from the Bahamas form: An import permit is required from the Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Industry (Nassau), for all animals being brought into the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Applications for the permit (along with a $10 processing fee per animal - money order or cash only) are made to the Director of Agriculture, P.O. Box N-3704, Nassau, The Bahamas. For more information, call 1-242-325-7502. faxed to them - money order or cash only. No personal cheques will be
For the U.S. and Canada, the following are the main provisions of the import permit as it applies to dogs and cats:
(a) The animal must be 6 months of age or older.
(b) The animal must be accompanied by a valid rabies certificate which substantiates that it has been vaccinated against rabies within not less than one (1) month and not more than ten (10) months prior to importation for the one (1) year vaccine.
(c) The animal must be accompanied by a Veterinary Health Certificate. Our vet fills out this certificate and also an International Pet Health certificate. The law says that it has to be presented within 48 hours of arrival in the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to a licensed veterinarian for an examination, but for domestic animals, the customs and immigration officer takes the paper work and never looks at the animal.
The Permit Is Valid For One (1) Entry And Must Be Used Within One (1) Year From The Date Of Issue.
