Are there any monuments or preserved World War II battlefields in the Philippine Islands?
My Father served in the Pacific Theater as a member of the U.S. Army's 16Th Signal Battalion in World War II. In addition to the New Guinea campaign and being among the first occupation forces in Japan he and his unit participated in the liberation of the Philippine Islands including the invasions of the islands of Leyte and Luzon. From his journal and preserved letters I know the places he served in the Philippines where I am planning to visit sometime in the next 2 years.
Yes Chuck there are monuments there. In Leyte, there is the MacArthur Park. That's the exact location where Gen MacArthur landed and said "I shall return". You can check the Department of Tourism for a complete list . That is an awesome journey that you will make :-)
I had an uncle that made it possible for General MacArthur to make good his promise to return to The Philippines. He passed away in 2004. But, he did make a return trip there in 1999 to place a wreath at the tomb of the unknown solider. I forget exacty where that is. Most likely MacArthur Park. He stated it was a wonderful visit and something he had to do. One word of caution...The Philippines is a dangerous place for Westerners despite what they may tell you. Please be aware of this as you go to rural areas.
