How to Journal your Heritage Tourism trip
My personal journal
Journal your planning, your trip, and your reporting on return from your trip
This article will encourage you to keep a journal of your heritage tourism planning, your heritage tourism trip, and how and where you report on your trip when you return. This article will speak only to preparing print journal entries, but you can apply it to digital journal entries, if you wish.
The photo is one I took recently of my personal journal. Does it remind you of ours?

Sketch Book
Do you sketch in your journal or keep a separate sketch book?
During my travels, I like to take time to stop and sketch what I see. Do you do that?
Do you keep your sketches in your journal or in a separate sketch book. This is my sketch book.
I use both black and colored pens and pencils for my sketches.
My own sketches
Sketch of tree and brook in my sketch book
Here, as a sample, I sketched some trees along a brook, in Colorado.
I'm not an artist, by any means, but these sketches help me remember some of the details of my travels. Being relaxed, and taking the time to do sketches along the way, is also beneficial, of course.
Do you do sketches as you travel?
Reporting on travels - There are many alternatives; what do you do to report?
These three links share three levels of reporting on heritage tourism trips after-the-fact.
The first is my retirement blog, where I routinely report all of our trips.
The second is my Heritage Tourism lens created after the trip, for general interest in the area we visited.
The third is a special, specific lens I created after the trip to recognize a performer we enjoyed while we were on the trip.
Examples of journaling related writing activities
- This is a page in my retirement blog where I record our travels
This link shows how I report on my travels, usually with my wife. This particular page related to our visit to southern Utah in May 2012. Feel free to look around for other days on the trip, etc. - Squidoo lens on heritage tourism in Southern Utah
I prepared this article after the trip reported above; for general interest. - Mary Kaye: Singer, Song-writer, Live Performer
I wore this article after this particular trip - because I was impressed by this particular performer, and wanted to share information about her.

Other sketching while I travel
What is your experience?
When I am traveling, I find my creative mind occasionally just kicks in and I want to sketch what comes to my mind - related to this particular trip or not. Does this ever happen to you?
Therefore, I keep a separate section in the sketch book (and the journal, for that matter) for these random thoughts. I think this is valuable
