We'd Like to bring HubPages to SXSW

Vote for our panel and make it happen!

Paul Edmondson would like to speak at the SXSW conference (an annual conference in Austin, Texas, that brings together cutting-edge interactive, music and film innovators) in 2012, and we would love to get your assistance to land him a spot. Could you vote for our idea at the SXSW PanelPicker? It'll only take a couple of minutes, and will greatly increase Paul's chances of speaking and getting extra visibility for our site and community.

Vote for the HubPages panel here (It does require signup at SXSW.com but it's painless.)

Here's our idea:

Bringing back the love when Google hates you

In a world where Google guards the gates of the Internet, the Panda update proved beyond reasonable doubt that every website is vulnerable to the search giant's changes. While Google does a very good job, the vagaries of search algorithm updates result in decent sites losing a huge chunk of their traffic, leading to distractions of resources in trying to recoup their search traffic. In this discussion, Paul Edmondson will talk about unsuspected insights from his Panda-update experience and offer 5 key best practices that will help your site remain stable during future changes.

We would love to have your support!

Pro Tips

Make the Most of Your Online Comments

What level commenter are you on HubPages? Are you a level I newbie, or a level VIII pro?  What is your approach to leaving and moderating comments online?

Listen in to our latest Online Writing Insider podcast to get some advice on commenting from commenting pros Jason Menayan and Simone Smith.  If you don't have time to listen in now, here's a sneak peek at some of our top tips:

  • Actually read work you're commenting on, and leave thoughtful comments (referring to something specific in the Hub/article, asking a question, sharing a personal anecdote or opinion about one of the issues discussed...)
  • Don't leave short, generic, or form comments
  • Don't start a commenting flamewar
  • Use feedback from comments on your own Hubs to improve your writing
  • When someone comments on your work sharing helpful, additional information, add it to your article (and credit the commenter)

The gist is this: comments play a major role in the world of online writing. It is therefore important that you both leave comments on others' work and heed the comments you get!

Hub Nuggets

This Week's HubNuggets

Every week, the Elite HubNuggets Team selects 18 Hubs from three different categories to be featured in the HubNuggets contest.  Only Hubs by new Hubbers can be nominated, so each week's nominees are written by relatively unknown newbies, and the contest is a great way to get to know new HubPages talent.

Because ladyjane1 had been kidnapped by her evil twin sister in a previous HubNuggets roundup Hub, I stepped in to create this week's roundup, calling all visitors to vote for the best nominees from the Travel and Places, Gender and Relationships, and Politics and Social Issues categories to help us rescue our missing team member.

The community poured in to cast their votes, both saving Lady Jane and selecting the fabulous winners below. Enjoy!
