I often go walking in the countryside and often get close enough to touch them, but I don't. I remember walking my dog through a field once, and one of the cows became curious about the dog, and came bounding over. Being a Jack Russell she started barking, but the cow just stood there. I tried to shoo it away, but it just followed me. Eventually I threw my Dog over a fence and jumped over it myself. When I got to the farm, the farmer was laughing, he'd seen everything. He said: 'Next time, just pick up a stick and give it a smack,'
Fortunately that was a long time ago, and I'm not so scared of cows now.
While I am not fond of cows, I have been up close and personal as neighbors raise them.
Have never had a cow for a pet but when I was a kid growing up in Ohio I let a calf suck on my finger when I was visiting a friend on her farm.
I've had a dairy calf suck on my fingers more than once and by more than one calf. Been close enough to a pet steer to give him a good rub-down just about daily. I've been close enough to a cow to milk her or put the milk machine on her...actually done that twice to around 50 cows at one time. Even did that to a Simmental beef heifer that was keen on accepting her calf but her calf was too weak to suckle. I've been close to steers on many, many occasions to feed, vaccinate, deworm and dehorn them, and to walk in the corral to check on them and look for any un-castrated steers, otherwise known as bulls. I've helped calve out a cow, rub down a new baby calf to get it started breathing again and moving, helped with C-sections, perform surgery on a steer with a massively infected scrotum, and do castration on bulls. On numerous times I've helped with semen testing bulls, often being the one holding the tail over the device that gives bulls the necessary "encouragement" to ejaculate for the vet to get a sample. I've even done rectal-palpation on a few cows too, and examined a fistulated cow, reaching into her rumen to get samples, and that sort of thing.
So how close have I've been to a cow? Well, close enough to say I've just about "done it all." This may sound wrong to some of you, but I've been close enough to a cow that I've been in front, behind, beside, inside and outside of one on far too many occasions to count!
When I was in 4H around age 12 I took care of a dairy cow for a week: milking, bathing, tending hooves, feeding, etc. It was hard work but a cool experience!
We had 2 pet calves which we used to feed + I have milked a cow so have been very close to them !
I was able to visit a friends house and feed to cute, little calves! They were adorable. Their names were "Lucy and Ethal"
Hi everyone! I loved reading your answers. I am not surprised to see that many of you have come really, really close to cows. I would like to be able to do some of the things that you have done like milking, bathing, etc. Aren't they just beautiful creatures?
Looking forward to more answers!
Growing up in a farm I got close to cows everyday and now that I became a Vet, in school I had very close contact with cows. Today my practice is limited to Pets, but I would still get very close to a cow.

I've been experiencing a drop in traffic for the last week or so. I've been seeing a lot of people in the forums talking about how they are seeing increases in traffic, but I am seeing the opposite. Is anyone else seeing a drop in traffic?

Good morning, lovely Hubbers! After returning to writing on HubPages after a break for a few years, I've been thinking about writing goals. Ultimately I'd love to have around 6,000 articles completed on here but for me I know that's probably a dream! At best I can write around 4 or 5 a week due to...
