Do you have any tips on working for a boss who is a perfectionist?
It can be difficult if the boss wants you to be perfect and becomes very critical.
Some can do that successfully, and others cannot. Much depends on personality, maturity, and willingness to do what it takes to communicate with such a boss (including respectfully repeating their words back to them). Evaluating whether you are the kind of person who could work in those circumstances is a crucial first step to benefiting from tips like developing careful listening skills, taking careful notes, getting instruction from the boss in writing, staying on top of personal goals in the job as opposed to making the job personal, etc.
I can work for these kind of Bosses, but I drive them nuts. Sometimes it's kind of fun.
You must try your best to satisfy the boss. For that you will need to do the following things:
1. First know thoroughly what the boss exactly wants from you. This will help you execute your plan. Also know the working style of your boss.
2. Once you have known the working style and wants of your boss, try to do everything as much perfect as you want. This will help you to get the initial satisfaction of your boss.
3. "To err is human" is a very famous proverb. So it is natural that you can make mistake despite your best efforts. And as your boss is a perfectionist, he will naturally rebuke you for that. But you mustn't be disappointed and try to work more hard to rectify that mistake.
4. If ever boss gives you extra work outside your fixed schedule, you must respond promptly. The main thing boss wants to see is your sincerity and integrity. In case of extra work, you can show this more effectively.
By doing all these things, you can do the best of works even under a perfectionist boss. You just need to relax and make sure that things are working out perfectly. Then you will see that everything will be fine for you.
Discuss the standard of "good enough" with the boss, as well as what has to be perfect.
A wedding floral display or other customer's expected delivery should be perfect - but to whose standard? The client's, the boss' standards or both? Trying to meet both can drive you crazy.
And then there's the "what is it you want to be perfect?" If it is a customer presentation, sure, but demanding perfection in that and conversational email exchanges gets to be too much.
