Do that first and know it cold before you listen to anybody else. Then go to their blog - http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/ and read the last yrear or so and all the comments. You'll see other places recommended in the comments and start to get a feel as to which ones are valuable. Continue your education there.
Google has an SEO guide for beginners that is very straight-forward and simple. I suggest you look that up and spend some time reading through it. Good luck.

I learned from Courtney Tuttle. I think he's got a lot of good advice, but he's dead wrong on content not being king. He lost a big following after saying that backlinks were more important than good content.
Looks like Google Panda has proved him to be even more wrong (even though he couldn't have predicted that.)
Other than that, though, I've found a lot of his advice to be incredibly helpful.

I now have 11 hubs that are not indexed by google - nothing published since July 12 (the last one was published on the 9th and indexed yesterday). Normally I've seen then set up with 24 hours, occasionally in 48, but now it's 8 days and not done!!??
