If you quote someone and what they wrote contains spelling or grammar mistakes, do you correct them?
I wanted to quote a recipe in my last hub and it contained some spelling mistakes which got me thinking about whether it was right to correct them or not. On one hand correcting them would be adapting the original source but on the other leaving them may look as though the mistakes where my own and effect the hub quality.
That is a tough one....
As an ELA teacher and an academic writer, I'd say that if you're using a parenthetical citation, leave it as is, then make sure that you place your source into your reference section at the end. Now, this is simply what I would do, and may not be what HP wants you to do. I agree with you on keeping the quote intact; that's an important aspect of using a parenthetical citation. If, however, you're paraphrasing and then attributing, I would make spelling and grammar corrections.
I hope that made sense. : )
Use [sic] after the mistake. It means that you've transcribed it exactly as it's been written or said by another, regardless of its mistakes.
That's why on news sites, for example, when they quote other people with bad grammar, they just provide the original quote under the beloved "parenthesis marks" and use the [...] function, to correct it. For example: John said, "I saw that fool [come] into the store wearing a mask, then when [the gun] came out we all hit the floor."
As in your case, if it involves spelling mistakes rather than missing words or poor syntax, I'd just correct them within the quotes and go on. What is the point in making somebody look even more careless and stupid than what they already are? Everybody makes mistakes and unless a person is a grammatical fanatic, this should be a fairly easy decision...
It is fairly standard to quote the mistakes but enclose them in square brackets to indicate that the quote is as the original author wrote it.
Thank you all. I have dyslexia and there is lots about grammar and syntax I don't know or fully understand. I did not know about the square bracket uses so now I know what to do in future Thank you
When I quote someone I quote them verbatim without correction. If the meaning of the quote is unclear because of grammer or spelling errors I make explanation for it. Quite often folks lapse into the vernacular of a certain part of the country or their heritage which adds charm and depth to the story telling. Good question!
Thank you. That is a good point, I had not thought of that.

Yes, I am a new "hubber." I am also a new writer. It has only been a few months since discovering I really enjoy writing on HubPages. My problem is, since I started writing on HubPages I have been a bit, let's just say, OCD when it comes to my spelling and grammar. Before I hit the...

Why do some hubs get a score of 100 even though they have spelling and grammar mistakes?I know a hub can be good without having a score of 100, but I can't help noticing spelling and grammar errors in some of them. I have even found this to be true when browsing the "best" section.

Is it considered rude to correct a fellow hubber's grammar or spelling? This has just been a question that has been rolling around in my mind. I see spelling and grammatical errors occasionally. Personally, I would like someone to point out my mistakes so that I can fix them and possibly learn from...

Is it rude to point out grammar/spelling mistakes on hubs via comments?I've come across numerous hubs that have grammar and spelling errors, some minor and some littered with mistakes. Otherwise, these hubs would be interesting and will written in my opinion. Is it rude to point out these mistakes...
