Should the Q&A section automatically close questions after a certain amount of time?

I think that leaving questions open indefinitely may be the reason we see the same questions over and over again in this section.  Would it improve user experience and make this section more interactive if questions were automatically closed to new answers after 6 months or something?  Many of the "hot" questions here have hundreds of answers and are several years old.

I think the question should automatically be closed when the person who asked the question has selected a "best answer."

that for sure, but what about questions where a best answer is never chosen? They also remain open for ages.

I was under the impression that they are closed when a best answer is chosen Wes. Or is it that no one can post new answers but still post comments? Havent necessarily paid enough attention to know.

I just think the way they choose Hot questions should be revamped. Say a time limit on the age. I do not think that questions should be closed unless by the author. I have had a couple very old questions get new answers and I enjoyed the flash back. I really don't want HP to have more control over another thing we do. They should just stick to their end. Ideally make a way to keep questions older than a couple months out of the feeds unless it is the feed of the person who posed the question to begin with.

Even this could work - a time limit would be perfect.

Christin...I asked a similar question quite a while back.  As I recall, one of the answers helped me a bit to understand why they remain OPEN for years.   It is for the general public (as opposed to Inter-Hub purposes)  Apparently "outsiders" bring traffic to our Q&A.   Could have fooled me.....but in any event...
The more annoying issue for me is that so very many questions are YEARS old but the Questioner never got around to choosing a BEST ANSWER.   This is pretty unfair to all those who take the time and thought to share their answers.
I actually think most hubbers forget all about that step in the process.

Best Answer? But what if someone like me gets an awesome answer from you, Christin, and Bill (billybuc)? It's just impossible to pick a best answer!

I agree peeples, sometimes I get so many good answers it's hard to pick just one. Even if outsiders view - they can't answer, so I still think they should close or drop off feed right?

Let the hubber, who asked the question be given liberty to reopen the question with fresh concerns in case he or she has closed the question for further answers or chosen the best answer. The reopened question may be shown in Latest Questions with date of revision by the questioner. Spiritual, Religious and Hot questions with hundreds or thousands of answers be closed by the HubPages Admins with an alert that if any body wants to answer the closed question can pose new question himself or herself by providing the Reference URL of the closed question.

reopening with new concerns etc. would also be a good idea, good point.

The thing is, WE don't have the option to close and/or re-open our Q's.  This is strictly an administration option,We merely post a question & choose a BEST & provide answers to others..I've asked only 6 Q's but do answer frequently.

I've just given up on the 'hot' questions entirely. I click on 'latest' and never look back. But, I see your point. The only reason I can think of for them keeping those questions open is because it drives traffic to HubPages. I've often searched google for the answer to a question and gotten results from posts like these. So, I suppose HP should keep them, but change the settings so that the Q&A section defaults to 'latest' for users. I think that would help get new questions noticed as well.
