   Everyone who is paying attention at all around here knows all about the value of keywords, but...
   
   what about tags?  Are Tags secondary in importance?  Also, we know that too many tags, or irrelevant tags are counter-productive,so just what kind of attention should we be paying to our tags?

   My understanding is that tags are as relevant as keywords. Tags are the search terms that people will use to find a topic they're looking for. So basically, using good and effective tags, just like the use of keywords, may help to drive traffic to your article.

   My understanding of tags is that they link your hubs to other hubs.  So if someone enters hubpages on someone else's hub, and then looks at related hubs, they might just see... and go to... your hub.
   
   I am not convinced they are used for keywords for external traffic.  Someone please correct me.

   I believe key words are useful for external incoming traffic whereas tags are useful for internal traffic.

   your tags help people find your hub post.  They should be based on your keywords and should be very specific to the content of your hub.  To do this, you should write hubs on very specific individual topics.

   I believe Tags are used more for other Hubbers when they are doing an internal search.

   Good question and one that is really worth getting a handle on. Tags are mega important and how you use them can make the difference between you getting loads of external traffic and not very much.

   I had to read that particular hub at least 4 or 5 times before it really sank in, but it's really worth persevering with it

   Listing tags links Hubs together by tag pages...more links from more tag pages usually means higher rankings in the Search Engines - add to that the fact that Hubbers search tags too and you've got yourself a traffic increase.
   
   As for importance, it's all important! To me anyways it's like baking a pie but missing an ingredient - pie won't ever be as good without it

   Moderation in all things. I like a system whereby excess gets penalized so, yes, make sure tags are relevant
