Cyber School, does it work?
I have a teenage boy who constantly complains that his classmates are holding him back from learning. What he means by this is that once he gets what is being taught, he wants to move on but since the other kids are not getting it, the teacher must help them out.
He is in 9th grade and I was wondering if perhaps Cyber School would be an option for him to learn at his own pace.
My wife and I had discussed some of the pros and cons but was wondering if anyone has a child in Cyber School that could share some personal light on this subject?
dont know anything about cyber school. wish you the best in your quest.
Hello Rich,
The bad news: the number of high school students who do not feel engaged by their coursework is HUGE.
The good news: schools are coming up with some alternative teaching formats.
In my child's high school they have a program for students who do not need as much supervision as their peers. The students do a lot of independent study and get school credit for non-school work such as volunteer work, or internship-type programs.
My point is that there may be a variety of alternatives available to your son (along with the CyberSchool option). I would suggest doing some research on what is available in your area, then talking to his academic counselor at the school.
Hey, it's great that he is talking to you about this - and that you are listening! The two of you are on the path to finding a solution that will have a positive effect his educational experience, in High School and beyond.
Cyber school is a form of homeschooling. I know many teenagers who do better in that setting because they can learn at their own pace, choose the materials, move on and explore beyond the scope of their curriculum. Depending on where you are located you may find different options available to you. Check for local charter schools, too. They may be able to pay for the online program for your teen.
Online schooling, or cyber schooling works amazingly, especially for special students. Amazingly the term special students means students at both ends of the spectrum. Gifted students soar when they can work at their own speed. Challenged students excel to the best of their ability when able to concentrate on their studies without peer group pressure or even intervention pressing them to do other things.
The only caveat is that the course program should be accredited, as many are these days. My two daughters attended one of the accredited Insight Schools. Both have finished high school and one of them has a 4.0 gpa and has hopes and significant possibilities of attending the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School.
You bet online schooling works and putting my girls in accredited online education was the best decision of my life.
I don't think cyber school is the solution to your specific problem. Maybe he should take advanced exams and advance a grade or something. Cyber school has its advantages but may not be for all kids since they need certain social skills.

Is school (for children) a waste of time and money?Thinking back to elementary, middle, and high school I can remember very little that I have actually needed to know outside of basic math and reading. So is there really a purpose to all those years of schooling. Is there a better way that could be...

Should high schoolers be able to choose core classes based on a choice of future career?Sophomores and upper classmen only though... they already have prep-classes that you can choose, but is that enough. Kids with 4.0's through high school bust their butts on learning useless information (like why...
