Why isn't there more discussion in school about Nikola Tesla ?
One reason could be that Tesla was born and educated in Europe (Hungary? Romania? my memory fails me). His rival in the theory of electricity, Thomas Edison, was the local hero. However, the alternating current advocated and improved by Tesla is benefiting a lot of people. Another reason could be that Tesla was an eccentric. He never married. He showed devotion to a pigeon whose loss he mourned over a lot. He let alternating current run in his body to show that alternating current does not kill, as Edison had claimed, that is why the latter did not favor it. Tesla's name appears in a computer game, though.
I had to look up his name to know who he was. I think many more people aren't mentioned that had important accomplishments. Possibly there were a lot of politics involved that so many people have been overlooked.
Edison had money, public appeal and backing. Tesla was a lone intellectual that most could not relate to. Even his college professors put him down when he mentioned A.C. Edison cut down DC because he couldn't understand it. He had power of the press--killed animals with AC, when DC would have killed almost as well. Called it":"Westinghoused".
You can't sell anything before its time, even if it's better. Maxim invented the automatic machine gun in 1885; The US was sold on its "one bullet; one Indian" philosophy. He could not sell his Ideas to the US, so be came an expatriate. Even England did not find full use of his gun until 1895. Einstein had public appeal, yet many of his theories were never fully accepted until his death. Yet, he even was stolid against new theories (Von Neumann, Steven Hawking) until the end. Christians couldn't accept Mohamed. Seat belts were "optional" until the late '60's, despite deaths..
i find that few people have ever heard of him which blows my mind. the man was a genius and i can't understand why he is not a household name.

What is the greatest rivalry you've ever seen?Rivalries by their very nature breed contention and drama. Whether it's in sports like the Red Sox and Yankees or in business like Coke and Pepsi, rivalries quench our constant thirst for competition. What is your favorite?
