Is America becoming a lazier and stupider culture? or not?
What about bad television? bloody video games? constant tweeting and texting? non-stop computer use? less reading? poorer educational standards? lower cultural and social standards? slovenly dress?
Actually, educational standards are not becoming poorer - they're getting better. 45 states have adopted the Common Core Standards, which are much more rigorous than previous standards. In some states students will have curriculum that is as much as a year ahead of where they were.
As for being lazier, yes, I definitely think we're becoming lazier due to technology.
You've listed them all. And I do believe we have become lazier as a society, but stupider, (or more stupid)--I'm not sure. I do believe we have lost all sense of propriety and decency and that in turn affects the way we dress, the way we interact with people and the way we set our priorities.
I think that educational standards seem to vary from state to state, but parents need to be involved and stop applauding for a passing grade when the child is capable of more. We have stopped striving for excellence and have accepted a drive toward mediocrity. Very sad.
For over the years the studies have shown that by now everything done in schools to make people not to think. The distractions such as television and video games plays a major role in making people not to read famous books and actually leading (telling) people what to do. Therefore a person stops to think on their own and does what the person on top says.
Lazy, yes. Stupider, not entirely.
If we do not want to do something, we create something to do it for us. We didn't want to get up to change the channel on the tv, so we created the remote control. We didn't want to flip the light switch from across the room, so we invented the "clapper" so we could turn on the lights from the comfort of our bed. We try to get others to do what we don't want to do. The sneaky way, normally.
Not all of us are stupid, though after watching the "Jersey Shore" we have to doubt our society. I know a few children who are beyond intelligent. A 13-year-old who taught a computer class at the community college. An 11-year-old who created an app for the iphone. Many duel-credit students, devious young males creating explosives, etc. They are there. You just have to find them.
