   What causes some people to obsessively ask contentious, even inflammatory, questions with the
   
   INTENT of engendering &instigating arguments or even totally deleting answers they disagree with?

   I believe I have experience this. What I find is that people are testing what they know  against what you know ,that can be a good thing if they realize their view is not the truth ,it can be a humbling experience ,but they must let go of tradition to embrace the truth,you can not have both.
   I think pride gets in the way.and to admit you have been wrong about a subject is on the line. It takes  a big person to admit and change route ,the same way as getting lost walking or driving and you think you know where you are at and you really do not know ,pride will not allow you to get help or assistance .
   But that will just keep you lost if you do not change your way of thinking and admit you need help by listening and accepting the truth of your being lost.
   This also applies with many subjects.

   Forums are an interesting place are they not ?    I suppose its no different than in real life , How many times have you been asked what you think about something , by a friend perhaps ,  only to be talked over , ignored ,  or outright attacked  for answering  at all ?
   
   There are so many people who care not so much about sharing ideas ,  discussions or  learning ,  something , but bullying their way through life itself .    Like the guy at the diner I suppose that never shuts up , just continues to talk  , they stop long enough for you to respond but act like you never said a word , when they continue .
   Ahh the forums !

   Pettiness.  That's all I can think of.  Comments and answers should not be deleted--they add to the conversation.  Even the "bad" ones.  Why not leave them up for others to read and make their own conclusions?  I think certain people don't want to hear from certain others.  They claim they have the right to delete answers as an editor.  But why bother asking the question to begin with?  Asking certain questions will get you certain answers from certain people.  It's rude to delete comments.

      Deleting comments can mean that someone hit a nerve! It could be a truth they are not ready to recon with.  They could also be offended if a person has attacked them with some unkind words. So the reasons can very.

   I've wondered that, too. I think that, as ahorseback says, some people want to ask a question just so they can give (or rant and rave about!) their own opinions. I also think that some people just like to look for a fight. I see that all the time in the forums.

   I always think that people who do this need their beliefs validated from the outside, rather than from within. To me, that means they're not really very secure in their own beliefs, because they only want to hear from people who agree with them, and can't really consider and appreciate those of people who don't.
   
   That's sort of sad, isn't it?
