Why Do Spiders Remain In One Place For Long Periods?
I spotted a spider on my door frame outside the house a few days back. I did not attempt to drive him away. (My live and let live policy combined with the "do not disturb" attitude!) It's been nearly five days and he has not moved at all! Is this a characteristic of all spiders or is he "special?" Do you know about the behavior of spiders?
Web-spinning spiders will remain motionless or 'in one spot' while they are waiting for something to land in their web. They don't want to move around and draw attention because this makes them likely to 1) get eaten by a bird and 2) makes things like flies less likely to get caught in their web!
But the big reason- spinning a web is quite a huge process that requires a lot of a spider's energy, and they sometimes wait weeks to catch something so they will conserve that energy.
Then again, maybe he's just waiting to trap you in his web and eat you.... but then again, I doubt it.
