Do you think that the public school system should be disbanded in favor  of home learning?

The schools are, in many places, dangerous and really not the best environment for learning.  In many cases, they are free day-care with little educational value.

That is the most rediculous thing I ever heard.  Our school system has been honored with 3 national hispanic scholars in the last 5 years. The district has amazing educational and community involvement.
Most parents don't have the time let alone the discipline to teach their children at home. I know, because I tried it with my youngest, she had special needs and I felt she needed a little more time at home to mature to the level of the other kids and it was very, very difficult to do. In the long run...the children suffer, it's too easy for parents to say, ok. you can watch so and so for a bit and then we'll work on english.
While I sympathize with the fact that yes there are many schools out there that are not up to par with the standards or security for children to learn, on the whole most are.

Schools also serve as places to learn social skills and communicate with peers. But most importantly, parents don't have the time to teach their children everything they need to know with their fulltime job. Imagine teaching your child English, maths, geography, history next to your fulltime job, cooking, etc.

Home schooling also stimulates that parents simply share their beliefs and views rather than academically accepted facts. That is not a good thing.

I don't think that most parents would be equiped to homeschool their children any better than the public school systme is doing right now. It takes a huge amount of discipline that I don't think many parents or kids would have.
Also, many parents work and do not have the time or money to quit work to homeschool their kids.
There are some horible public schools out there, but there are also some excellent ones. If you don't like your school district, there is always private school as well as homeschool.

Homeschooling works very well in some circumstances and not at all in others. Coincidentally, not unlike public schools. In my city, we have some incredibly good schools and some schools with rather significant challenges.

I think what works best is not to assume that one answer is right for everyone.

I homeschool myself but I would like to see our public schools improve, not disbanded. We need world class public schools like those in Finland and South Korea. Even our best students are too far behind their peers in other countries. If other countries can have excellent public schools, we can too.

Unfortunately, most parents have no idea that our schools are not up to par. Many assume that their kids go to a good school and that bad schools only exist in poor neighborhoods. It will be hard to improve the situation until more parents become aware of the fact that there really is a problem with American education in general.
