Styx and Stones Will Rock Your Bones
My choices for the Top Six by Styx.
Yes I am doing a bit of a rhyming game here. I remember growing up listening to the radio and hearing the full albums played on Saturday evenings one summer. It was not easy to stay up that late either. But I tried and if I made it usually fell asleep one or two songs into the album.
As I grew older I collected most of their albums on the CD format. As you read down through you will find a bit more of my history with this band. And what parts they have played in my life. So please listen to the songs and the words that I have written about each song. And maybe just maybe they will add a little something to your lives as well.
# 1 Come Sail Away
The first time I remember hearing Styx was at summer camp
Hidden Valley 4-H Camp to be exact
The first night there was a fire drill. I knew it was coming and did not fall asleep that evening. The next morning they woke up the camp with a bugle call. Followed by the song by Styx - Come Sail Away. Usually it would just be the bugle. But with the positive feedback received, the rest of the week it was the song that work up the campers. Somehow I was awake before the music started every morning. Other years when it was the bugle it took a bit more to get me out of bet.
For this song alone
# 2 Boat on the River
The Carrier Dome
Paradise Theater
For the Paradise Theater Tour I saw my first concert. It was at the Carrier Dome where my dad was doing food service. Let me start with a side note. I had quiche. And with how good it was it is not the last time that I have had quiche.
As I said my dad worked there so we had to be there early. Its at this point I will start to brag. I was ale to sit and watch them set up and test the sound system along with practicing. So I got two concerts that night.
Down side - I had to go to the bathroom during the main song I wanted to see. You guessed it Come Sail Away and the door would not open. We were in a private booth and they did not hear me banging on the door.
Afterwards I was able to watch them do clean up. Breaking down the stage and the equipment. Its amazing how much you can do and not realize it until much later.
# 3 Lady
Darien Lake
Again it was several years later when some friends at college scored some tickets to see Styx live in concert. This was an evening outdoor concert. We drove up and did not even care about going on the rides. We just wanted to see and here the band.
It was interesting as one of the folks in our group was not feeling well part way thought the concert and needed to lay down. The crowd moved back to giver her some room to lie down. There were those that asked if they could help. After a while she started to feel better and got up again. And the people moved back in around us.
# 3 Lady Part 2
Part of a Proposal
While proposing to the wife of 25 years the song playing in the back ground was Lady. That is why this song gets the double billing. It is not # 1 on the list but it is in the top 5. The image is from our rehearsal dinner place settings.
# 4 Mr. Roboto
A picture is worth a thousand words.
In this case that is pretty close to the truth. This song got on the list more for the video than the song. The images that were throughout the song to me meant more then anything else.
# 5 Suite Madame Blue
This one maybe long
But the music is well worth it
Yes the music that is playing along with the words. For this song the music means more than the words. At least to me it does.
# 6 The Grand Illusion
You may have noticed...
That some of these videos are in black and white. That's because this band has been around for several years as I mentioned at the top of this lens. Also thinking back I remember seeing some of them on TV when the only option was black and white. Again I am showing my age. But as they say is it my life or just a Grand Illusion?
And here are a couple of Solo Acts - As there was a time when the group had taken a break.
This was my first Styx concert and album.
Boat on the River my # 2 is on this album
