I am all for World peace and everyone living harmoniously with the World around us. However, since the beginning of history there has always been conflict in one way or another which makes me feel that disharmony is a necessary evil. Is this the case or is conflict caused by humans?
Human nature, survival of the strongest, and the looser remembers the loss and organizes to get even.
I think it is embeded in the Human psyche. So probly so, it does seem a necessary evil. Orf at least we make it true.
Do we not have the capacity to change for the better?
Yes it is.
I used to do a meditative moving type of yoga where after 40 minutes to an hour everything was all smoothed out. No pain, no emotion, no nothing, just simple being. I found it to be an intolerably uncomfortable state. I could stand it for only a few minutes and I'd have to go put on some music or take a walk or visit with someone. Samadhi isn't all it's cracked up to be.
On the other hand a really good drama that brings about an emotional catharsis is quite wonderful.
Conflict is not necessarily evil.
@Dutchman- please try to refrain from claiming that Human Nature and the Survival of the Fittest, as being intertwined. They are not.
Human nature has nothing to do with the survival of the fittest, because consciousness and conscience allows people to not act like animals. Even with that said- many people continue to live like animals and have animal mentality, but that's only because there happens to be too much misinformation and distortion, so others can continually do what they please, while others have no clue what happened.
Well while religion has clear positives, I do think it is the major cause of conflict as large masses of people compete to defend or impose their indoctrinated ideologies.
Cag, they are most certinly intertwined.
Survival of the fittest is a Human trait, and we have in the past and still do demonstrait this daily.
everything is a competition, our speech, or push to get or aquire things, the protection of ourselves over others, we most certinly do. I really disagree here
we all need mirrors, we do not have to be agressive, we choose it as a part of us. We can not avoid it. Never have.
people act in animal behavior because they can, they have minds and can decifer information and anyone living past 20 can certinly discern some things above basic emotions, but we revert back.
example corrner some on with gossip, and watch folks gather like a pack to support you if that person shows the slightest weekness! Weither it is true or not and they know the truth.
Our Kids face it every day, and we do to on the Job and in social settings. We have animal tendency, naturaly. We gravatate toward it, we hunt gather and protect what we find.
You can dress it up, but it is basic behavior inside the person.
I have seen to much of it now to say otherwise.
It is a necessity, as long as the devil goes around the earth like a roaring lion.
He and his demon angels put bad thoughts in evil minds first. This leads to
evil actions. We make choices: good or evil. We can choose God's good or the devil's evil. I encourage the world to choose good. Only God can bring true peace.
I am completely non-religious and therefore not burdened with god and the devil. I simply see life as the truth and if we respect it and each other then there is no need for conflict.
Cob, If I may add to this:
evil does not make you kill, that is an excuse. Man makes the decision, without God guidance. Thats the original definition of Sin- to act without God, or a God-set mind.
The devil is a made up sham for fear, man fails himself, by his own decisionmaking and part of that decision is basic human instinct.
Thats where mankind fails . We have to accept ourselves as we truly act, then we can cure ourselves and the rest of this mess we all are creating.
We need to do it fast before no one is left.
Cag, let me say this a little different so you can see me, my reasoning here;
I have traveled extensively the last 20 years for the World Bank, and I honestly believe from what I have seen that The US because of its Business system and the way it is allowed to work (Right or wrong in folks eyes) has provided us a secure country and we have been able to relax and be more comfortable, and thus we can reason, we have time to.
When you have a solid roof over your head and survival is not formost then you have time to reason, so yes, you are correct here. But..?
The rest of the world is not like us. And many, or most places survival daily is a necessity. If you have ever been in that situation you would really see the animal instincts come out. and its is awakening to know that we in the US have those same Human traits. so I have to respectfully disagree. Those instincts are inherant in all of us.
Look at a house pet...after so many years they forget how to survive outside. The instincts are there but never used. But if you ever turn them loose, they re-develop because they are in-bred. Humans are the same.
Thats what I mean, if it even makes sense..
dutchman1951 you make a good point here. With the US and the UK where I live aggressively protecting our pampered existence others are forced to suffer. Surely the case is for a more even distribution of wealth and resources to ensure that everyone enjoys a decent existence. Of course, to achieve this would mean a reduction to our own standards of living.

Is human nature basically good or not?It is clear to me that there are good folk in the world but is it true as well that some people are just plain bad or else they are just indulging in bad behavior that has become a habit for them. Most of the time, this is an abuse of power but even some people...

we've been saying it...but look here, a message from the Rebbe Lubavitcher Schneerson. Really great guy, chassidic, long beard and hat and everything "religionist"but he said this to a "nonbeliever" who (take note) BOTHERED to write to him...it's like yes, rather typical of...

The opinions of others on ourselves - why do we care?Whilst we can all try to say "I don't care what anyone thinks of me" it's likely to be a lie - we do so! But why? Any answers?

I do not pigeon hole myself as a Creationist, Agnostic or Atheist, but rather as a person who attempts to retain an open mind. Any talk of proof either way is simply delusional. Kurt Godel, the greatest logician who ever lived, prooved beyond doubt, within the strict boundaries of mechanistic...
