Parents, what embarrassing thing did your kid(s) do to get "the look" from other parents. You know, the "you're such a crappy parent and I'm glad my kid didn't do that" expression.
For instance, I got many of those "bad mommy" looks at school when my daughter decided to cut off a huge chunk of hair from one side of her head. Did I mention she cut it short? More important details... I was at the grocery store and had left her home with daddy for about an hour. Moreover, she pushed a chair to the counter, climbed up and reached back to get the scissors in a bucket way in the back.
And yet, even though he was supposed to be watching her and I was the one who raced her to my hair stylist to attempt a quick fix, I'm the one who got the "you're such a crappy mommy to leave scissors around where your daughter can reach them" followed by the ridiculous questions... "Why did you leave scissors out?"
Well, at least she didn't end up in the emergency room like the time our son did more than eat the peas my hubby fed him while daddy had his back turned and I was out with family.
Picture the scene ...
... I was traveling on a packed bus, with my two sons, they were 3 and 4 at the time. The youngest was sat on my knee. We were sat, quietly, minding our own business.
When he farted. The biggest and the loudest I'd heard in a long while. I think they may have heard it upstairs.
Right on cue, he kinda jumped a little on my knee (the effort probably) and quickly shouted out "ohhhh mummy - you made me jump! And it's sooooo smelly!" He then had a fit of the giggles.
All I could do was stare at the floor. Whilst the rest of the bus stared at me.
I've never forgiven him. Being 3 years old will never be a good enough excuse in my book
Oh Lord where to start!
I have 4 of them - two of the have made it to adulthood and the other two might still get there if they listen to their older sisters. I have a host of incidents like that one.
One memorable one centers around driving and the fact that my two oldest could not leave each other alone-"Stop touching me!".
For months, years even, I threatened to make them get out and walk. They were about 7 and 5 at the time.
One day something snapped, I stopped the car and out they came. I put on the hazard lights and followed them the last 3 or 4 blocks home in broad daylight, honking every time they would attempt to stop.
The neighborhood was aghast, shocked, appalled, you name it. I was that mother who made her kids walk! I got looks that would melt paint and comments about my probable mental IQ and parenting abilities. I also never had any more major problems while driving.
That was YOU? I've heard that story before! Wow! Takes guts to do that but I agree with your methods!
I have not yet had any of these particularly. The closest we've come is when we are out for dinner (we take Dinky on our dates, go figure!) and she will point at a man (always a man) and very loudly call him "Doggy!"
This, of course, meaning "Hey, he's cute! What's his name? Will he come talk to me?" Because "Doggy" is her name for everything that she likes! LOL
Good for you... I might have to try that one some time. Of course, with that woman who got arrested, who knows if I'll be brave enough. I think the way you did it is fabulous.
I would have to say my daughter. She loved running amok outside and ran everywhere including the road. Don't know how many times traffic stopped because she ran out...scared the hey out of me and the drivers and I alwaysssss got yelled at about "what kind of parent are you? don't you watch your kids?!!"
