I have created this forum for anyone interested in writing or publishing their manuscript. I would like to awnser questions on why you should avoid vanity or self publishing companies. Discuss the rigors of finding a lit agent and the bonuses of doing so. Why it is good to enter writing contests. I won my first won $2500 with my first peice of wirtten material ever which was a novel and how it can benefit you.  Plus any and all questions you may have.

You shouldn't avoid self-publishing, nor should you avoid literary agents. The two are polar opposites in a way, and both represent avenues for getting your work out into the reading public. By suggesting that you should avoid both self-publishing AND literary agents, you are reducing the publishing options for writers to the slush pile of presses, who do run contests from time to time, but who also pick "winners" for publication as a day-to-day function of their business model. Whether contest or "acceptance," both require a willingness or unwillingness on the part of the submitter to be subject to the whims of chance and someone else's opinion (something that has proven time and time and time again throughout history to be random at best if the evidence of so many canonical writers means anything, but that also, occasionally, works like a winning lottery ticket, etc.).

What you SHOULD do, if you are a writer, and I can only hope you'll agree, is work on your craft. Write every day, read a lot. But mostly keep writing and improving, then have the courage to put your work out there, through whatever avenue seems right for any given piece, based on a business-like and mature recognition of how the industry functions, what you have made, how it fits into the marketplace, it's target audience, your ability to function as your own marketer (or not), your level of patience, your work ethic, and your conviction as to its quality.

Sorry my response was near sighted. I do agree with most of what you said. You made some valid points and I was to quick to jump to the keyboard. Tuche.

hell yeah you should unless you story is not worth being published, all you are going to loose is alot of time money, your title. Slef publishing do they promote for you? No, do you have the money to do that? No. So what book stores are going to care about a book that is self published with no publicity and no reviews. Plus print on demand self publisher use is BS, they get your money peace you might as well throw that story in the attic it is done. How many best sellers have been self published?  here is your awnser 3, and the people that did that hade up to $500,000 to promote their book. Ok new stat how many people have self published book?  Thats a huge number, honeslty who knows, how may people who self publsihed made enough money off of their book to cover what it cost to have their book self published, here is an awesome stat 7%. WOw, wonder if the 7% made a profit. Next question.
