Google keyword tool is overated

   Picture this...you manage to find a keyword phrase with 40,000 exact match keyword phrases, compose a hub,the hub is ranked in the first page of google search results but unfortunately traffic does not come as expected. that has happened to me. my question now is whether the adwords tool is reliable in any way.

   I'll probably get the numbers wrong here, but seems like I've seen that going from first position to third (still on first page) results in a 60% drop in views.
   
   Are you sure you aren't getting appropriate traffic for your position?
   
   Having said that, it can go the other way as well.  I have one hub google predicted 170 views per month for: within 2 months it had settled at 80+ views per day while bouncing between 2nd and 3rd position on first page.

      I can confirm that drop because I've had pages that used to be in number 1 and have slid down.  Even third place is a massive drop.

   It might also be that the OP is not using scroogle.org for his search results, resulting in a localised and screwy Google result, especially if signed into Google at the time, or any of the Google services including Adsense.

   I've been hearing that it does not only have to do with keywords, but also the category and tags in HubPages that are chosen. Wonder what others know about this.

      You heard correctly. Getting the correct category is of vital importance, as are the tags which shouldn't be too general, nor too long tail, but relate directly to the content of your hub.
      But learning the correct usage of keywords is a good place to start.

   You need to rank at #1 for one thing, for another the traffic is an estimate. I rank for a weird little term that doesn't even show up in the keyword tool (on one of my own sites) and yet the amount of traffic it receives plus the metrics clearly evidence that the specific keywords I used are in fact a fairly high searched for term.
   
   Best thing is the fact that I didn't even do any research for that particular web page, was just something I fancied writing one day.

   Thanks for your replies guys..as some of you are saying it could be the position the hub is in that is bringing the change in traffic level. for my case it is number 9 few days after publishing and i hope traffic will rise sooner. lets wait and see.

      According to research done on click throughs on results on the first page of Google, position #9 would only get about 1.45% of that traffic. And that of course, can vary widely depending on topic. Especially if the first eight results are highly relevant to what the searcher is looking for.

      Yes.  The other settings can be useful for coming up with alternatives to your suggested keyword, but "exact" is what you want to actually research with.
