My family is planning a vacation for spring of next year. We need to choose a place to go so that we can start saving now. We are currntly torn between Washington DC and Disney World.
Which one is better???
That is tough but if you have children under 13 I would say DisneyWorld.
Gee, Last year we had the same problem so we did both.
The train leaves from DC in the late afternoon and gets to
the orlando, winterpark, kissimee area early enough the next day for you to get to WDW just at the right time for check in.
Have fun. Both DC and WDW were fantastic. Disney World was so much larger than I had remembered and it takes at least one full day for each of the parks.
DC's proximity to historical sightseeing is phenomenal. Additionally, Bush Gardens is just a drive away. However, I've always enjoyed Disney World. Your trip is dependent on your vaca budget; but if it isn't an issue, I would choose Orlando, due to Universal, Disney, and even, Gatorland!
I guess it depends on who you'd like to meet - characters or clowns. (sorry, I couldn't resist) (I'd think DC would be a lot cheaper.)
Depends on how old your kids are.
Disney
Disney is always fun. Seaworld is right there too, and Aquatica. The hotels in Orlando are pretty cheap, stay at the Celebrity Resorts Lake Buena Vista, it is right across from the disney entrance and you can get a three bedroom hotel room for cheap. Busch Gardens Tampa is only an hour away. Tickets and food are the most expensive part of your trip. Doing the park hopper is the best deal because you can go to multiple parks in one day. I've been to Disney probably 20 or more times? But I live in Florida. If you need any tips let me know.
D.C.
The hotels are more expensive than in Orlando. However, almost all of the museums are free, giving lots of free entertainment.
It also depends on when you are planning this trip before. Lines at Disney can be ridiculous to deal with if you have little kids. Planning is the best way to get through. Get to parks when they open, get fastpasses for the big rides first, and plan what time you're going to eat, etc.
Have fun!
DC has a Six Flags Theme park 30 minutes from town and King's Dominion about 90 minutes from town. It has the amazing Smithsonian and all of the monuments. There are cruises on the Potomac, Broadway plays, and top rock bands in the venues just outside of town. There is very little Disney can offer in comparison.
You can stay in cheaper hotels in the suburbs and take the metro in.
Under no circumstances would I be dragged into anywhere Disney, so I'd go for Washington.
I've been to Disney twice a year (some years more) since I was 4. I've never had a bad time. But it's about planning for sure. Where are you coming from RJ? How old are your kids?
D.C. is a necessary experience and an amazing one. But depends on how old your kids are.
If you have older kids I would absolutely say DC, any younger than 10 or 12 I would probably go Disney. Disney isn't quite as fun when your 15-17 as it is when you're little. If your family likes history--DC The Smithsonian museums, the White House, the Memorials--there's a lot of American history to be seen in DC.
I guess you can see where I am hoping to go on our next vacation...
Basically everything to do in D.C. is free. Many kids love going there.
D.C. also has a cool 'Spy Museum' that you might want to check out if you go there. Around $15-$25/person. You get to be a Spy for a day and learn all sorts of history via hands on learning. Families love it.
That being said, tough choice! Disney is great, too. I've never met a kid who hated Disney! hehe
At 13, I would probably take him to D.C. or Universal in Orlando.
Universal has amazing rides for a kid who just discovered he loves coasters.
Do the Universal And Islands of Adventure park hopper.
Tell him to put his head back before The Hulk takes off. Just a little tip.

I write an Orlando tourist website, so I go to Disney and Universal Studios a lot. Just wondering if there is anyone else here that writes about Orlando attractions? Or the Florida area?

Is a trip to Disneyland worth the money?I have never been to Disneyland but as a kid I always wanted to go. I now have a young son and have thought about taking him. However, I have also heard that you pay a lot of money to stand in lines all day. Has anyone ever been and did you and your kids...

Annually my younger sister and I take our children to Florida. I love it for the Amusement Parks' attractions like Disney, and Universal. Where do you go with your kids and why?
