Should the power be in the hands of a politician as generally happens or in the hands of a leader
I would hope that the Politician would be a good leader and not make the assumption that politicians are not leaders. Often they are poor leaders but some are of a higher quality than any other leaders in american history.
Neither. Power should be in the hands of the people! A leaders job is to educate the people to make informed decisions on the rules that govern society. A politician on the other hand is a leech living off of the sweat of society for the sole purpose of enriching themselves...
Yeah I know...I'm a bit cynical... it's hard not to be considering our "leaders" don't read the bills they pass, usually don't even write them, they have the lobbyists do that. and don't even bother to debate if what they are passing is constitutional, or infringes on the God given rights of the people!
The power should be in the hands of a statesman. One who will put the best interests of the country ahead of his own ideology. One who will do the right thing even if it is not the "in thing".
Politics creates leaders. Leaders become statesmen when in power. All three are interlinked. If a politician influences more than 2 persons, he becomes leader. He has a chance to gain power. If a leader in government succeeds in dealing with other countries, he becomes a statesman.
But the quality of politicians, leaders and statesmen are going down. The main reasons are social divisions, economic disparities, lack of impartiality, etc.
Power should be in the hands of the elected.
The elected are more often then not professional politicians (ie those who seek power for a living).
Of this group, a few are, or become, statesmen.
Even more are, or become, criminals.
I agree. Power should belong to the People. When they start ignoring the will of the People then can easily lead to tyranny and maybe despotism. Who wants that?
The ultimate power of force should reside with the people, but they should wield it through representatives of their choosing. The lesson of history is that the direct democracies (like in Greece) were unstable. They became mobs which degenerated into anarchy and eventually tyranny (because you needed a muscleman to restore order again after the bloodletting). Everything needs a constraint, some accountability, even the will of the people.

Some thoughts:No campaign contributions allowed all campaigns are funded by a tiny flat tax every party receives a given amount to publicize their views so long as they can get say 50 000 party members. Yearly full IRS audit for all major elected officials.A limit on legal fees for any court case...

Why does politics only seem to attract people that want to lord over us all and enslave us?Government handouts and other forms of "free" money are anti-human as they serve to demoralize the populace, make us lazy and not motivated to achieve anything other than sitting on our asses. ...
